Technicians of the Residue

MS 9361.44 · Guilds, orders and offices

Scope and standing

Technicians of the Residue is a working designation for the body of accredited specialists attached to the Resonance Technicians' Guild whose field duty concerns the handling, sampling, and settlement of Perceptual Residue in its settled and semi-settled forms. The designation appears in Guild rolls from the recension of the Seventeenth Concordance onward and is used in preference to the older term "sweepers," which survives only in floor slang and in the marginalia of the Custodial Manual for Particulate Residue, Vol. IV.

The Technicians are not a guild in their own right. They hold accreditation from the Guild, are bound by its calibration schedules, and appear in no register of independent bodies. Their standing relative to the Quiet Bureau Custodians is the source of a dispute older than any living Technician's apprenticeship (see below).

Duties and instruments

A Technician's day is governed by the calibration of the Resonance Comparator Arrays at dawn and by the settlement readings taken at the sixth bell. Between those two fixed points, the work is largely attention: watching the Silentium Gradient Residue for the particular dulling that indicates a floor is about to hold more than it should, and reporting the reading to the Guild station, which in turn decides whether to issue a Resonance Alert.

The standard instruments are the Residue Balance, used to separate the intentional component of a residue from its incidental drift; the tone-forks of the Resonance Nullifiers, which are worked by hand in quarters where powered equipment would disturb the settling; and the sample jars issued quarterly under seal from the Master Calibrators. A Technician working without a current seal may take readings but may not certify them, a distinction that has cost at least three certifications and one stairwell access.

Fieldwork is not without hazard. The Guild's own figures record twelve cases of Technician-attributed residue accumulation between the Winter of the Long Inventory and the following thaw, all on floors adjacent to the Free Flow corridors. One of these — the accumulation on a landing of Floor 308, recorded at 1.7 grams per square metre over nine days — was traced to a Technician who had been holding the same sample in the same hand for the entire period without noticing. The report does not name them. The Guild's records do.

Relation to the Guild's other divisions

The Technicians work alongside, but are distinct from, the operators of the Conceptual Filter on Floor 308 and from the staff of the Chamber of Mechanized Resonance. Filter technicians deal in what a floor's residue means; Technicians of the Residue deal in how much of it is there and how fast it is moving. The distinction is repeated in every orientation and is forgotten by roughly the second week of field duty.

Where the Technicians touch Sympathetic Floor Resonance matters, they do so as contractors to the joint administration, not as parties to it. The Tier Gamma Observational Committee is supplied with their instruments but not their findings, a separation the Guild maintains is procedural and the Committee maintains is pointed.

The Bureau dispute

The question of whether residue that has settled onto a floor becomes, at the moment of settlement, the property of the Quiet Bureau Custodians for the purposes of removal is answered differently by the two offices. The Bureau cites the ordinary custodial right over particulate matter on walkable surfaces. The Guild cites the Concordance provision that residue under active measurement remains an instrument reading until certified otherwise, and that Technicians are measuring continuously.

The compromise in force since the Winter of the Long Inventory is that a Technician may measure a settled residue without disturbing it, but may not move it, and that the Bureau may not remove it while a Technician is measuring it. In practice this means both parties wait. The landing of Floor 308 was measured for eleven days under these terms and removed on the twelfth, by which time the reading had doubled and neither office would sign for it.

"A residue being watched is not yet a residue being held; a residue being held is no longer a residue being watched. The Technician's duty is to the interval between the two, which is short."

— Seventeenth Concordance, Annex 11, cl. 3

Accreditation and Numbers

Technicians are numbered from alpha upward within each intake, and the numbering restarts every time the Guild re-issues its field manual. The current sequence (omega intake) stands at 41 accredited Technicians across the floors, though only 34 appear on the active duty roster; the remainder are recorded as "held in reserve for measurement contexts not yet specified," a phrase the Guild has declined to elaborate on in three successive Concordance amendments.

Apprenticeship runs four years: two in the scriptoria learning to read the residue registers of floors they will never visit, two in the field under a journeyman. Graduation requires a single practical examination — the certification of one live residue, on one floor, before one examiner — and has been failed, in living memory, for reasons as various as over-certification, under-certification, and certifying a residue that turned out to be a colleague.
