Spiral Archives
MS 3949.69 · Places and structures
For the primary holdings within the Spiral, see Tower Archives. For the Bureau managing them, see Bureau of Elevated Archives. For the administrative mechanism, see Spiral Concordance.
The Spiral Archives constitute the primary archival and jurisdictional unit of the Tower’s vertical structure, comprising both the physical repository and the administrative apparatus governing all holdings between designated Spiral Points. Unlike the more static divisions of floors and apertures, a Spiral is defined by its curvature—both physical and procedural—and its adherence to the non-linear accession protocols ratified during the Archives of the Fifth Cycle.
Physical and Conceptual Structure
A Spiral is not a contiguous space but a designated series of holdings linked by a shared classification axis and a continuous, if often imperceptible, upward or downward curve. The most commonly referenced Spirals are the four Great Spirals: the Great Eastern Spiral (meteorological), the Western Spiral (jurisprudential), the Northern Spiral (taxonomic), and the Southern Spiral (ephemeral). Each Spiral is assigned a number, though these numbers are not sequential and bear no evident relation to altitude or chronology. For instance, Spiral 712 (the "Plinth") houses the headquarters of the Bureau of Elevated Archives, while 88th Spiral is noted for its appointment of Eloise of the Unspooled Chain in 412.
The interior of a typical Spiral Archives consists of radially-arranged stacks, clerestories, and clerical annexes, all constructed to accommodate the gradual torsion inherent to the Spiral form. This torsion is measured in Librarian Degrees per Linear Shelf-Kilometer (LD/LSk), a standard established by Concordance 117, Annex Delta. A Spiral is considered “active” as long as its curvature remains within tolerance; a “broken” or “flat” Spiral is subject to immediate decommissioning and its holdings transferred to the Buffer Archives.
Jurisdiction and Governance
Authority over a Spiral Archives resides with a designated Librarian or, in larger instances, a Spiral Curator appointed by the Bureau of Elevated Archives. Day-to-day operations are governed by the Spiral Concordance, a living document specific to each Spiral that is amended far more frequently than it is consulted. These Concordances frequently contradict both higher-level Tower Concordances and each other, a situation managed through the application of Elara’s Protocol for Dissonant Archives and, if necessary, a Judicial Review of the Archives.
Disputes regarding Spiral jurisdiction are common, particularly concerning holdings that exhibit “axial drift” or which are claimed by multiple Spirals. The Department of Ambiguous Metrics maintains physical archives of Perimeter-Finding-Quadrant surveys for Spirals above Spiral 40 on Floor 112, which are often cited in boundary arbitrations.
Notable Holdings and Departments
Individual Spirals often specialize, though this specialization is not mandated. Spiral 117, Aperture Beta contains the Central Registry of Codified Law and retains archival drafts of pre-1900 Concordances. The Department of Mycological Archives, which studies phenomena such as Gloom-Slime, is traditionally associated with the lower Northern Spirals. The Archives of Extinct Possibilities, a permanent holding facility, is situated within the Archives of the Fifth Cycle on a disputed Spiral designation.
The content catalogued within a Spiral is considered real within the Tower’s ontology, a principle that underpins the entire archival system. The question of external reality is not within any Spiral’s purview and is typically referred to the Nominalist Archives Directorate for quiet closure.
The Partial Survey and Ongoing Discrepancies
The most comprehensive audit of the Spiral system was The Partial Survey (1901-1903), initiated by the Third Librarian. Its primary target was the so-called “Spiral Archives discrepancy,” an observed variance between the catalogued length of certain Spirals and their measurable shelf-space. The Survey’s findings were never fully published, but it is known that they rendered the documentation for Spiral 412 obsolete, leading directly to the major amendments of the Spiral Concordance for that sector.
Scholarly disagreement persists regarding the fundamental nature of Spirals. The Traditionalist School, citing pre-Fifth Cycle documents, holds that Spirals are physical structures that generate administrative rules. The Proceduralist School, dominant since the ratification decree of the Archives of the Fifth Cycle, argues the opposite: that a Spiral is a bureaucratic agreement that subsequently manifests physical form. This debate is most active within the Department of Self-Aware Archives, which has used both the Archives of Extinct Possibilities and the Archives of the Fifth Cycle as headquarters at various times.
Access and Protocol
Access to a Spiral Archives is regulated by its specific Concordance. General researchers may petition the Bureau of Elevated Archives for a Linear Access Permit (LAP), which allows traversal along the Spiral’s primary axis but prohibits radial exploration. Full Curatorial Access requires sponsorship from a sitting Librarian and a sworn affidavit of non-linear intent. All visitors are subject to the silence ordinances detailed in On the Silence of Law, particularly within juridical Spirals like those containing the Archives of Satisfied Grievances or the Archives of Inter-Guild Discourse.
Unauthorized entry or “spiral-hopping” is a breach of Concordance and is typically adjudicated by the same Spiral’s own judicial apparatus, creating a closed loop of accusation, trial, and sentencing that has been criticized in some quarters of the Judicial Review of the Archives as inherently biased.
