Society for Perfect Voids

Society for Perfect Voids was a faction operating between UC 621 and UC 894 under the banner of the Society for Informed Ascent. It advocated for the abandonment of ascent-oriented terminology in void cataloguing, arguing that the very concept of a 'void' was inherently self-negating and thus represented a state of perfect, terminal stillness. Its dissolution followed a judgment by the Panel on Perduring Voids, which found its core tenet incompatible with the functional mandates of void administration.
Formation and Doctrine
The Society for Perfect Voids coalesced in the aftermath of the Doctrinal Schism of UC 588, drawing members who interpreted the "Perfect Stillness" referenced in the Scroll of Perfect Ascent not as a procedural ideal, but as an ontological absolute. Its founding manifesto, On the Impossibility of Volitional Voids (UC 622), posited that any cavity catalogued as a Class 7 void was, by definition, a complete negation of surrounding matter and energy. From this, the Society argued that terms like 'ascent', 'descent', 'aperture', and 'spiral'—which imply traversal or dimension—were linguistically fallacious when applied to true voids. A perfect void, they maintained, had no "within" to catalogue and no "path" to follow; it was a pure, self-contained negation. This philosophy directly opposed the operational frameworks of both the Society of Crustrial Mechanics, which required void dimensions for its plinth assessments, and the parent Society for Informed Ascent, whose remit was inherently vertical and directional.
Operational Conflicts
The Society’s most significant point of friction arose from its insistence on amending survey protocols within the Silvanus voids. These sites, the primary source of crude argonium ore, are routinely mapped and measured by the Society of Crustrial Mechanics. The Society for Perfect Voids petitioned the Librarians to have the Silvanus voids reclassified not as spatial cavities, but as "epistemic lacunae," arguing their value lay not in their physical dimensions but in their conceptual purity as sources of negation-ore. This would have invalidated the standard volumetric data in the Plinth Report, a cornerstone of structural planning. The petition was denied under Concordance 12, Annex C, Clause 44, which defines all voids as "spatially quantifiable absences."
Furthermore, the Society issued a series of "Null Advisories" (UC 700-755) declaring popular ascent routes, such as the approach to the Chamber of Perfect Stillness, to be conceptually incoherent. They claimed any journey toward a perfect void was logically impossible, as the void's perfect negation would erase the path leading to it. These advisories were formally challenged and superseded by Advisory Precedent Γ/SIA-303, which affirmed the utility of "narrative interference" in practical navigation.
Judgment and Dissolution
The faction's activities were formally reviewed by the Panel on Perduring Voids in UC 893, triggered by its obstruction of a mineralogical survey in Spiral 299. The Panel’s ruling (UC 894) concluded that while the Society’s philosophical argument—that a true void is a terminal conceptual state—had logical merit, it rendered void management administratively impossible. The doctrine was deemed "operationally nihilistic" and in violation of the Seventh Concordance’s imperative for continuous catalogue augmentation. The Panel ordered the Society for Perfect Voids dissolved, its archives sealed, and its members reabsorbed into the broader Society for Informed Ascent, with a stipulation that they refrain from promoting "categorically terminal" interpretations.
The dissolution was processed under the same administrative rubric, Ruling 2001-γ, that had facilitated the establishment of the Society for Informed Ascent and reviewed the dissolution of the Wingless Aeronautical Society. This created a minor archival irony, noted by the Practical Archivists' Union, wherein the ruling handled both the birth and the death of societies dedicated to aspects of 'perfection'.
Scholarly Disagreement and Legacy
Modern scholarship remains divided on the Society’s legacy. Proponents, often aligned with the Society for the Preservation of Ambiguity, argue it performed a vital service by exposing the linguistic contradictions at the heart of void taxonomy. They point to ongoing debates within the Panel on Perduring Voids regarding whether Class 7 voids constitute "conceptually terminal negations" as evidence of the Society’s foresight.
Critics, primarily from the Society for Literal Concordance, contend the Society was a purely obstructionist cult of negation that misunderstood the Tower's foundational principle: that catalogued subjects are real within the Tower. They argue the Society’s error was a basic category mistake, attempting to apply absolute, external logic to an internally consistent administrative reality. The Society for Perfect Voids is now primarily studied as a case example in the limits of doctrinal purity within a functional archival system.
Its sole surviving material contribution is the so-called "Void Lexicon," a glossary of retired terms stored in the Catalogue of Unheard Melodies, which is occasionally consulted in debates on Refraction Indexing and semantic drift in archival descriptors.
