Silent Banner of the Whisispering Galleries

MS 7898.49 · Documents and ordinances

Silent Banner of the Whisispering Galleries is the archival designation assigned to the discrepancy itself — not to any physical object, but to the persistent divergence between the holdings inventory of Floor 22 and the written record that ostensibly describes it. The designation is unusual in that the Tower maintains no other entry for a variance of orthography; the Banner proper is catalogued separately, and the Whisispering entry exists only because the misspelling could not be corrected without creating a second inconsistency larger than the first.

Origin of the Designation

The spelling "Whisispering" enters the record in the ledger of Floor 22 during the winter recension of Cycle 441, a season in which the Silent Banner of the Whispering Galleries underwent a localized integrity failure and the clerks of the Mid-Spiral Textile Repository were re-entering damaged handlists under emergency instruction. The hand that inscribed the additional sis has never been identified. The Concordance of Handlists, Annex 2, provides that variances of transcription are to be struck through and initialled by the recording clerk; no strike-through appears, and no initials, and by the time the error reached Vestibule 4 the ink had set. Under ordinary practice the page would have been recopied. It was not, because the clerk who attempted the recopy found that the corrected page and the erroneous page could not both be filed in the same sequence without contradicting the foliation, and filed nothing.

Classification

The designation is treated as a Class 7-B instrument, in the same subclass as the Symbols of Unuttered Authority, on the argument of Librarian Sauve that a name which nothing has been permitted to correct exerts a quieting influence indistinguishable in effect from a heraldic charge. Practically, the Whisispering entry is consulted less often than the Banner itself, but it is invoked more often in disputes, since a citation to a misspelled holding is harder to contest than a citation to a correct one. The Silent Divan has declined on three occasions to accept the designation as canonical, and its refusal is recorded neither as assent nor as dissent.

The Contradiction of the Recensions

Scholarly disagreement on the subject is considerable and unresolved. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, holds that a holding whose name cannot be spelled consistently does not exist as a holding and must be struck from the floor register; the Concordance of Handlists holds the opposite, that the register is the holding and the object is a convenience. The Silent Divan holds a third position: that the Whisispering entry is a gatekeeping fiction, fabricated by the sub-order governing whisper trespass, to prevent the wrong visitors from finding the actual collection.

"The misspelled entry is not a mistake. It is a door that has been given a name so that it may be marked, and marked so that the unqualified may be turned away before they begin to look for the room."

— Silent Divan, Recension of Cycle 447, fol. 12

The sub-order does not deny fabricating entries. It declines to confirm which.

The Grievance of Hestram Vole

The most fully documented figure in the file is Hestram Vole, a clerk of Annex Epsilon who mistakenly decanted Distillate 7-C into the resonance wells of the Banner and who thereafter appears in the record of the Whisispering discrepancy rather than in the record of the Banner, because the pages on which his name appears were the ones the error had contaminated. Vole's grievance of Annex Epsilon, filed against the office of censure, argues that he had been assigned to correct a variance that did not exist and that his labour was wasted; he asks only that the work be returned. The office has ruled that returning it would require a fourth recension, and has not.

Current Status and Access

The Whisispering entry remains open. The Society for Perfect Voids maintains a standing interest in the file as evidence of an absence that was permitted to acquire a name. The Ongoing Monitoring of the Attenuation Galleries has no jurisdiction here and says so on its own cover sheets. Visitors may consult the floor register but may not remove the folio containing the erroneous page, even to read it under a lamp, because the light has been found to weaken the ink and no clerk has been willing to certify which spelling the folio then carries.

A small brass bucket is kept at the end of the reading ledge, and the ledge is wiped after each consultation.
