Simple Passage (Single Spiral Sector)
MS 8556.05 · Practices and doctrines
Simple Passage (Single Spiral Sector) denotes a right-of-way limited to a single, non-branching subsection of a Spiral Passage. It is the most basic form of sanctioned transit governed by the Edicts of Passage and serves as the foundational unit for more complex navigational permissions. Authorization is typically granted via a limited-scope Sigil of Passage, which must display the specific Spiral Notation of the sector in question.
Definition and Scope
A Simple Passage is formally defined in Annex 7-B of the Edicts of Passage as "a transit event contained wholly within the boundaries of one consecutively numbered Spiral Sector, from a designated ingress aperture to a designated egress aperture, without lateral deviation." The passage is considered a single event under the Doctrine of Continuous Transit, meaning any pause for longer than twelve standard chrono-units (as per the Tower Chronology) technically constitutes the termination of one passage and the initiation of another, requiring separate authorization.
The scope is strictly defined by Sector markings. For example, a Simple Passage for Spiral 44 from Aperture 12 to Aperture 15 is valid only within that sector's helical gradient; stepping onto a connecting landing that services Spiral 40, Sector Theta would immediately invalidate the sigil. The simplicity refers to the topological containment, not necessarily to the ease of the transit, as sectors like Spiral 77-Gamma remain proscribed for Simple Passage holders due to quarantine protocols.
Authorization and Sigilation
Authorization originates from a Writ of Sanctioned Passage, but for a Simple Passage, the writ is often a pre-printed form (Form P-7) with a single sector identifier. The corresponding Sigil of Passage is a brass token, etched with the Spiral Number and Aperture Identifier, and often a sequential validation code. These sigils are non-transferable and must be presented upon ingress and surrendered upon egress to a duly appointed Passage Advocate.
A point of persistent bureaucratic contention lies in the classification of transits within sectors that possess subsidiary passages. Concordance 412.7 states that a Simple Passage includes "all ancillary ducts and service runs integral to the sector's function." However, Concordance 412.8, a later amendment, clarifies that "integral" excludes "designated alternate or scout passages." This has led to disputes in places like Spiral T-54, which is formally a subsidiary of Spiral 40, raising the question of whether a Simple Passage for Spiral 40 permits deviation into T-54. The prevailing, though not universal, interpretation is that it does not.
Common Applications and Limitations
Simple Passages are the standard issuance for routine maintenance crews, inter-sector couriers on fixed routes, and preliminary surveys. The system's predictability is its primary virtue. For instance, the document sorting bays of Spiral 44's Aperture Omega rely on couriers holding Simple Passage sigils for reliable, scheduled transfers.
The limitations are significant. A Simple Passage grants no right of entry into cross-sector junctions, maintenance bays for other spirals (such as the contested area of Spiral 117, Sector 9), or into apertures designated as "terminal" or "ingress-only" for that sector. Furthermore, it offers no protection under the more robust Right of Non-Harmful Passage statutes that apply to multi-sector journeys; the holder's legal standing is limited to the explicit terms of the single-sector writ.
Notable Exceptions and Contested Zones
Certain sectors have exceptions codified by special concordance. Transit through Spiral 14, due to its acoustic instability, requires a Simple Passage sigil supplemented by a Vibration Dampening License. More complex is the status of sectors undergoing re-cataloguing, such as those involved in the Sector Theta Re-cataloguing Project. A Simple Passage issued for a sector pre-recataloguing may or may not be honored post-recataloguing, depending on the timestamp of the writ and the publication date of the latest Chronology supplement.
The most famously contested zone for Simple Passage is the ingress point at Spiral 117, Sector 9. Officially designated a maintenance bay for Spiral 77-C, it is also a disputed secondary ingress to Spiral 117 proper. A Simple Passage for Spiral 117 does not grant access to Sector 9, but a Simple Passage for "Spiral 117, Sector 9" is a legal paradox, as the sector is not recognized as a valid transit sector for Spiral 117 by all archival authorities. This has been a fertile ground for Passage Advocates' litigation for decades.
Relation to Higher-Order Passages
The Simple Passage is the building block for all complex itineraries. A Writ of Sanctioned Passage for a Guided Descent is essentially a linked series of pre-authorized Simple Passages, each with its own sector-specific sigil clause. The procedural efficiency is considerable, as it allows for the modular revocation of permissions should a single sector become impassable or restricted.
Similarly, the accreditation of Primary Spiral Passages for Passage Advocates requires the candidate to demonstrate mastery over the grant and administration of Simple Passages in at least forty-seven distinct spiral sectors before progressing to multi-sector logistics. This ensures that even the most complex navigational jurisprudence is grounded in the precise, limited mechanics of the single-sector transit, the immutable unit of movement within the Tower's vertical expanse.
