Redundant Gate
MS 3173.85 · Objects and instruments
The Redundant Gate was a disputed aperture on Floor 17,114, the resolution of whose ontological status concluded the Contest of the Redundant Gate and precipitated the establishment of multiple interpretative schools. Its former location is occupied by the Hall of Unresolved Syllogisms.
Physical Description & Contested Materiality
No surviving material sample of the Gate is catalogued. Contemporary accounts from the Contest of the Redundant Gate are contradictory: the Materialist School's volumetric analysis described it as a "hinge-metal of resonant nullity," while Intentionalist depositions argued it possessed only "the quality of being perceived as a barrier." The Third Concordance, Annex γ, lists its official dimensions as 2.45 by 3.10 meters, but appends a footnote stating these figures derive from "the mean of all submitted measurements, including those that were negative or transcendental." The aperture itself was reported to show a consistent view of a granite corridor identical in every respect to the one in which the observer stood, a feature central to the ensuing debates.
The Contest and Central Paradox
The dispute, formalized as the Contest of the Redundant Gate, originated from a routine filing by Archivist-Logist Kaelen (later founder of the Axiomatic School). Kaelen's filing, Log #312-455, noted that the Gate served zero discernible function: it opened onto an architecturally identical space, its presence did not alter airflow, light, acoustics, or permitted pathways, and its "closed" state was indistinguishable from a plain wall. He formally proposed its classification as "Redundant" and its administrative deletion from the structural registry.
This provoked immediate counter-filings. The Literalist School argued that "gate" was a necessary descriptor for any hinged barrier in a wall, regardless of utility. The Realist School contended its physical interactivity (it could be opened and closed) confirmed its reality. The subsequent decades of debate, which saw the crystallization of the Interpretivist, Substratist, and Intentionalist factions, are exhaustively documented in the proceedings of the Contest. The core paradox was summarized in the Resolution of the Redundant Gate: "The Gate is definitively that which provides no division, offers no alternative, and whose absence would cause no measurable change."
Resolution and Administrative Consequences
The Contest of the Redundant Gate was concluded by the issuance of the Resolution of the Redundant Gate (Year 634). The Resolution, invoking an Instrumentalist principle, declared the Gate "an instrument for the division of administrative responsibility" rather than physical space. Its care was assigned to the newly formed Custodians of the Irrelevant, and its ontological status was settled as "procedurally real." This decision is often cited as a pivotal moment in the Decline of the Axiomatic School, which had advocated for its logical dismissal.
The function of a gate is not solely to be passed through, but to be the subject of a regulation concerning passage. Its redundancy in the former capacity amplifies its necessity in the latter.
— Resolution of the Redundant Gate, Principle 7
The Gate's material decommissioning followed in Year 641, pursuant to Clause 404 of the Ninth Concordance, which permits the physical removal of a structure once its administrative reality has been secure for a seven-year probation. The space was redesignated as the Hall of Unresolved Syllogisms, a repository for logically sound but pragmatically void arguments.
Legacy and Later Influence
The Redundant Gate became a foundational case study in Tower epistemology. The Seal of the Downward Gate, commissioned in Year 700, explicitly references the Gate's paradox in its marginalia. The methodologies of the Intentionalist School and the Dialogical School are directly traceable to the interpretive frameworks developed during the Contest. Furthermore, the Gate's principle of "procedural reality" informed later policies, such as those governing the Pursuit of Specific Holdings and the maintenance of the Midden of Perfect Transparency.
A permanent exhibit in the Hall of Unresolved Syllogisms displays the only known artifact: a brass hinge-pin, catalogued as "Object Δ-17,114," discovered during the Hall's renovation. Its provenance is disputed, with the Materialist School claiming it as genuine hinge-metal and the Substratist School asserting it is a "reification sediment" left by the prolonged debate. The Contest of Contradiction of Year 812 notably attempted to re-litigate the Gate's status by applying newer Spiral 719 topological models, but the motion was dismissed on procedural grounds, affirming the finality of the original Resolution.
