Purists
MS 4947.63 · Practices and doctrines
Purists denotes any of several distinct and often mutually antagonistic factions within the Tower, unified primarily by their formalist adherence to the letter of archival and structural law as recorded in the Concordances, and by their rejection of extenuating circumstance or interpretative drift. The designation is not universally accepted; many factions so labeled by others explicitly reject the term, viewing it as a pejorative oversimplification of their nuanced doctrinal positions.
Doctrinal Tenets and Common Ground
All groups referred to as Purists share a foundational belief that the Tower's order is explicit, literal, and contained entirely within its founding documents. This leads to a rejection of what they term 'fluidity of knowledge'—the common archivist practice of allowing cataloguing standards to evolve with new discoveries. Purist thought is typically text-centric, prioritizing the written word of the Concordances over unwritten tradition, oral precedent, or practical necessity. A core principle, articulated most forcefully by the School of Procedural Purists, is the indivisibility of architectural and bureaucratic orders; a flaw in one is seen as a corruption of the other.
Major Factions and Schisms
The landscape of Purist thought is fragmented. The Absolute Purists, following the teachings of Lira of the Forty-Seventh Landing, argue for the complete inviolability of the original, unamended Concordance texts, rejecting all subsequent amendments as spurious. The Alpha Purists, in contrast, accept the amendment process but maintain a strict constructionist view, most famously arguing that Postulate 44-Alpha is a purely administrative entity with no phenomenological footprint and that Annex Alpha's sub-provisional status is a significant clerical error.
Other significant branches include the Guild of Clockwork Purists, who model bureaucratic processes as deterministic mechanisms and famously denounced Context-Dependent Weighting as 'metaphorical accounting' in their pamphlet The Deterministic Codex; the Aperture Purists, a historical reformist movement active during the Epoch of Clear Glass that sought to create 'Unitary' administrative states; and the Manifold Purists, who focus on the topological integrity of cross-referential indices.
Operational Influence and Conflict
Purist factions exert influence primarily through the Department of Cataloguing Consistency and the Society for Literal Concordance. Their disputes are rarely physical; instead, they are conducted through the issuance of competing corrigenda, the filing of procedural blockades (form P-7α), and the commissioning of ceremonial objects to underscore doctrinal points, such as the Solemn Clockwork Nuncio commissioned by the Guild of Clockwork Purists. Inter-factional conflict is constant. For example, Alpha Purists and Absolute Purists are in permanent disagreement over the validity of Protocol 12-D, which the former deem non-existent and the latter accept as a flawed but binding amendment.
Criticism and the "Purist Dilemma"
The primary critique of Purist methodologies is their perceived inability to handle contradictions inherent within the Concordances themselves. Critics, often aligned with Contextualist schools, point to the fact that the Concordances frequently contradict one another, making a strictly literal adherence to all texts simultaneously impossible—a paradox sometimes called the "Purist Dilemma." Purist factions each resolve this dilemma by selectively deeming certain clauses or entire annexes as non-canonical, a process their opponents describe as circular reasoning. Furthermore, the practical rigidity of Purist cataloguing is often blamed for the creation of recursive, empty, or paradoxical archival entries, necessitating costly remediation by the Oneiric Integrity Screening office.
Historical Development
Purist thought is generally traced to the early Epoch of Codification, with the School of Procedural Purists serving as the originating intellectual faction. The schism into Absolute and Alpha branches is recorded as occurring in the 142nd year of that Epoch, following the controversial ratification of the Seventh Concordance. The movement saw a resurgence during the Epoch of Clear Glass, spurred by the architectural reforms of the Aperture Purists, and again during the Epoch of Mechanistic Analogy, which gave rise to the Clockwork Guild. Modern Purism is less a single movement than a family of methodologies applied across various administrative levels, their shared label often applied more for bureaucratic convenience than doctrinal accuracy.
