Manifold Purists
MS 5357.88 · Practices and doctrines
Manifold Purists were a doctrinal and cartographical school of Speculative Topology that emerged in the mid-27th cycle of the Ninth Concordance, primarily concerned with the inherent clasticity of the Tower's spatial fabric and its subsequent cataloguing implications.
The central tenet of the Manifold Purists was that the Tower's expansion is not merely additive but fundamentally recombinative. They argued that new floors do not simply accrete at a terminus but manifest through a process of "latent-fold emergence," wherein pre-existing but unrealized interstitial spaces achieve structural integrity based on the observational pressure exerted by cataloguing activities. This view, often summarized by the maxim "The act of looking summons the corridor," positioned archival work as an active force in topography, a notion that placed them in direct opposition to the static, deterministic cartography of the Guild of Clockwork Purists.
Doctrinal Foundations
The philosophical groundwork for Manifold Purism was laid in the treatise On the Fluidity of Knowledge by the school’s foundational figure, Archivist-Loremaster Valerius. Valerius posited that the Tower’s infrastructure—its corridors, landings, and ventilation shafts—constitutes a "living manifold" whose geometry is responsive to intellectual inquiry. A proposed but unfiled document, he argued, could subtly warp the angles of adjoining stairwells, while a completed cross-reference might cause a previously dead-end hallway to extend by several meters. This doctrine of "clastic architecture" was formalized in the school's primary text, The Dodecahedral Lattice: A Provisional Map of Intent-Space, which attempted to apply the sanctioned lattice structure of the Ninth Concordance to predict areas of probable spatial flux.
Practical Applications and the Cartographer's Dilemma
Operationally, Manifold Purists advocated for a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to floor management. They established the now-defunct Office of Prophylactic Cartography, whose agents would attempt to "pre-catalogue" subjects deemed to have a high probability of imminent manifestation. By filing placeholder records and provisional concordances for as-yet-nonexistent phenomena, they believed they could guide the emergence of new floors into more logically contiguous and manageable regions of the Tower’s numbering schema. This practice, however, led to the infamous Cartographer’s Dilemma: did their pre-cataloguing cause the expected floor to manifest, or did the imminent manifestation of the floor create the conditions that allowed them to predict it? This recursive uncertainty eventually became a primary point of internal schism.
Scholarly Disputes and Factionalization
The school was never monolithic. A significant internal rift existed between the "Soft-Clastics," who believed manifold responses were gradual and probabilistic, and the "Hard-Clastics," who argued for instantaneous, quantum-geometric leaps triggered by specific archival actions. Furthermore, the Manifold Purists engaged in protracted scholarly disputes with other factions. Their most notable conflict was with the Absolute Purists, who dismissed clasticity as heresy against the immutable bureaucratic order, and with the School of Procedural Purists, from whom the Absolute Purists descended, regarding the indivisibility of architectural and bureaucratic layers.
A particularly personal and well-documented feud existed between Archivist-Loremaster Valerius and Librarian-Scribe Valerius (no relation), a staunch proceduralist who authored the rebuttal Fixed Points in a Stable Edifice: A Refutation of Elastic Geography. The debate culminated during the Inquiry into Latent Manifold Events of Cycle 28, which ultimately concluded that the Tower's frameworks were reactive, not prophylactic, dealing a significant blow to the Purists' institutional influence.
Decline and Legacy
Following the Inquiry’s findings and the decommissioning of the Office of Prophylactic Cartography, the school’s formal influence waned. Many of its core ideas were absorbed and adapted by later movements, notably the School of Latent Structure, which synthesized Manifold principles with proceduralist rigor. Today, the term "Manifold Purist" is often used pejoratively by archival conservatives to describe any methodology perceived as overly speculative or destabilizing to the fixed geography of the Concordances. Nonetheless, their emphasis on the interactive relationship between cataloguer and catalogue continues to inform advanced studies in Speculative Topology, particularly in the analysis of so-called "volitional voids" on little-traversed floors such as Floor 207.
The final known publication from the school was a fragmentary appendix to The Dodecahedral Lattice, discovered in a disused annex of the Office of the Custodian. It consists of a single, oft-cited line: "The map is not the territory; the map is the question to which the territory is the answer."
