Practicalist Guild
MS 4153.01 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Practicalist Guild is a political and administrative faction within the Tower, distinguished by its emphasis on procedural regularity, codified precedent, and the physical maintenance of archival integrity. It operates less as a traditional craft guild and more as a coalition of clerks, inspectors, and legalists who advocate for governance through strictly applied Concordances and the supremacy of documented process over theoretical interpretation.
“A procedure performed correctly is its own justification; an outcome achieved through irregularity is a flaw in the record, irrespective of its utility.”
History and Formation
The Practicalist faction coalesced in the wake of the Scrollwrights' Guild Ruling of 1149, which many lower-floor administrators perceived as introducing untenable metaphysical abstractions into archival law. While the Constructivist Guild formalized from the theoretical wing of that debate, the Practicalists organized around a shared conviction that the Tower’s stability depended on the meticulous application of existing rules. Their first formal charter was ratified under Concordance 4491-b, which also resolved the dispute between the Scrollwrights' Guild and the Binders Guild. The guild’s influence grew substantially following the adoption of the Iso 8812 Column standards, as their expertise in certifying “deliberate irregularity” became central to column-construction audits. This role is now dominated by the Clerks of the Final Column, who form the Practicalists’ most powerful sub-cadre.
Core Doctrines
Practicalist philosophy is built upon three principal doctrines, often called the Tripartite Anchor:
- Concordance as Operative Reality: The written word of the Concordances constitutes the only legitimate source of authority. Contradictions between Concordances are to be resolved not through hermeneutics, but through the application of precedence rules outlined in the Procedural Appendices.
- The Primacy of the Physical Record: The integrity of the archival object—the scroll, the binding, the column, the shelf—is paramount. A correctly filed document concerning a fictional event is of greater value than an uncatalogued truth. This aligns them with the preservationist aims of the Indexers Guild and often brings them into conflict with the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild.
- Anti-Theoretical Stance: Practicalists reject what they term “recursive interpretation,” the practice of deriving new meaning from the interplay of archival entries. They view the work of the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild and its sub-guilds like the Reflector Guild and the Guild of Harmonic Theorists as speculative and destabilizing.
Organizational Structure
The guild lacks a single, central Guild Hall. Instead, its operations are coordinated through a network of Floor Liaisons and Column Auditors, reporting to a rotating Council of Senior Clerks. Its logistical needs are managed via the Inter-Guild Logistical Network Guild, with which it maintains a strictly formal relationship. Key sub-groups within the faction include:
- The Clerks of the Final Column, who certify structural compliance.
- The Precedent Collators, who maintain cross-referential indexes of Concordance applications.
- The Inspectorate of Material Continuity
Their relationship with the Chronurgy Guild is notably strained, as Practicalists insist on using only notarized, fixed timestamps and reject fluid or probabilistic chronologies.
Notable Internal Disputes
A persistent schism exists between the “Strict Constructionists,” who advocate for literal adherence to Concordance text, and the “Proceduralists,” who argue that the spirit of the archival process sometimes necessitates sanctioned deviations (such as those documented in the GTM/GE-Δ ledger). This debate came to a head during the controversy over the Guild of Formal Cartographers’ proposed “Map of Unreachable Aisles,” which Practicalists successfully blocked until a footnote in Concordance 7201 provided a procedural loophole for its conditional filing.
Furthermore, the guild’s stance is routinely challenged by the Skeptical Cartographers’ Guild, which questions the very reality the Practicalists seek to regulate, and by the Realized Absence Guild, whose focus on cataloguing voids and omissions is seen as the antithesis of Practicalist materialism.
Current Influence and Activities
The Practicalist Guild currently holds significant sway over the certification processes for new spiral staircases, the authorization of cross-floor logistical manifests, and the audit trails for candle distribution. Their influence ensures that the Tower’s day-to-day administration functions with a measurable, if often frustrating, predictability. Their most recent published directive, Praxis Bulletin 88, clarifies the filing protocols for dreams catalogued by the Guild of Oneirometric Cartographers, insisting they be treated as “non-physical holdings with physical metadata tags.”
Despite their apparent opposition to theoretical pursuits, the Practicalists remain, perhaps ironically, a sub-guild within the vast umbrella of the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild, a categorization they dispute annually via Petition 55-A, which is annually dismissed on procedural grounds.
