Pneumatic Clarion Network
MS 8409.04 · Objects and instruments
The Pneumatic Clarion Network is a sonic adjunct system to the primary Central Pneumatic Stacks, designed to audibly signify the status and priority of in-transit carrels and to broadcast administrative alerts. Its operation is defined by Concordance 89, Annex VII, and its maintenance is a shared responsibility between the Logistical Network Guild and the Archivists of Unvoiced Phenomena.
Function and Design
The Network consists of a series of calibrated reed-and-bell mechanisms installed at strategic intervals within the main conveyance channels and terminal bays of the Central Pneumatic Stacks. As a standardized archival container, or carrel, passes a given point, the specific configuration of air pressure differentials triggers a distinct tonal sequence. These sequences, known as Clarion Signatures, indicate the carrel's Type designation (as per Concordance 89), its destination floor, and any appended priority flags. A sustained, low-frequency drone, for instance, signifies a carrel containing Temperature-Sensitive Materials bound for a climate-controlled archive, while a rapid, ascending triplet indicates an Urgent Memorandum routed for immediate hand-delivery upon arrival.
The system also features manual broadcast stations, most notably at the Logistical Coordination Hub on Floor 770 and within the Lower Scriptorium. From these stations, authorized personnel can transmit coded alert patterns—such as the twelve-note "Cascade Pending" warning or the five-note "Conduit Clearance" all-clear—across entire vertical sections of the Tower.
Governance and Protocol
The legal foundation for the Network is notoriously fragmented. While Concordance 89, Annex VII, provides the technical specifications for tonal ranges and acceptable resonance materials, the authority to declare new alert signatures is claimed by three separate ordinances: the Eighth Concordance, Annex IX (cited by commentator Arlo Vex in his treatise on Network permissions); the Third Concordance, Clause 14, regarding "Audible Administrative Instruments"; and a standing resolution from the Guild of Harmonic Logicians. Disputes over which signature to use for a "Provisional Reality Cataloguing" carrel were a direct contributing factor to the Incident at Floor 14,022, wherein conflicting clarion calls led to a routing algorithm failure.
Protocol demands that all personnel within earshot of a broadcast alert must acknowledge it by repeating the final note of the sequence, a practice known as "Echoing the Clarion." Failure to echo is technically a breach of Concordance 89, though enforcement is sporadic and often depends on the temperament of the presiding Librarian.
The Chord Archive
An unintended consequence of the Network's operation is the continuous generation of ambient soundscapes within the Tower's central administrative core. The Archivists of Unvoiced Phenomena, operating from a sub-chamber near Spiral 117, maintain the Chord Archive: a continuous recording and cataloguation of all Clarion Signatures and their interactions. They argue that the emergent harmonies and dissonances created by overlapping carrel signatures constitute a unique form of data stream, reflecting the real-time logistical state of the Tower. Several scholarly papers posit that analysis of the Archive's records from Y204 SCE could have predicted the pneumatic pressure anomalies that preceded the Incident at Floor 14,022 by nearly seven hours.
Maintenance and Anomalies
Maintenance is performed during designated Acoustic Lulls, scheduled quarterly. A persistent anomaly, designated Clarion Ghost 7, involves a faint, melancholic major seventh chord heard in the Pneumatic Conduit Array of Central Atrium 5, unrelated to any logged carrel movement. Attempts to trace its source have been unsuccessful; prevailing theory holds it is an echo from a decommissioned conduit branch, though some technicians within the Logistical Network Guild privately suspect it is the signature for a carrel type that was ordained but never actually implemented.
The Network's dependency on the constant temperature of the Central Pneumatic Stacks (a fact designated in Y112 SCE) means any fluctuation can cause pitch drift in the clarions, leading to misidentification of carrel types. A dedicated corps of Tuning Monitors uses standardized pitch pipes, calibrated against the fundamental frequency of the Central Spire, to perform real-time adjustments.
