Perspective Grafting

MS 1876.14 · Practices and doctrines

Perspective Grafting is the authorized practice of binding a non-native mode of visual and perceptual geometry onto a material substrate already governed by an established projective regime within The Tower. Distinct from Ontic Grafting, which introduces the foundational logic of a concept, Perspective Grafting transfers only the rules of sight and measure — the angle of recession, the weight of shadow, the permissible curvature of a corridor. The practice is principally conducted within Floor 1,337 under the supervisory authority of the Bureau of Unified Perspective, and is frequently mistaken by junior clerks for a subtype of Linear Perspective Collapse, a confusion the Ninth Librarian’s Expedition endeavoured to correct and subsequently abandoned.

Origins and Early Recensions

The first attested Perspective Graft is recorded in the margin of Precedent Omega7 45, wherein a Substantiation Officer of the Lower Recesses affixed an isometric grid onto a stairwell originally built to Annex E: Non-Linear Progression. The graft held for eleven days before the stairwell resumed its native spiral, taking with it three measures of ink and the left boot of the officiating clerk. The Librarians declined to rule on the incident, citing the Ninth Librarian’s Expedition's standing silence on footwear.

By the third recension of the Third Concordance, Perspective Grafting had been separated from general ontic work and placed under the Clerk-Registrar of Linear Standards, who was instructed to "maintain the ledger of borrowed angles" (Third Concordance, Annex 4). The Lateralist School disputed this assignment, arguing that no angle could be borrowed that was not already present in The Stacks of Unmoored Perspective, a position the Bureau of Unified Perspective answered by authorizing the Resonance Shelves as a neutral substrate.

Procedure and Material Substrate

A Perspective Graft begins with the measurement of the host volume's native Perceptual Flattening Quotient (PFQ) using a Type-3 Entropic Potential Gauge. The grafted regime is then introduced by a Substantiation Officer through a process resembling Ontic Grafting but limited to projective geometry. The Office of Chamber Coherence must countersign the graft before the volume is reopened to foot traffic.

"No graft shall exceed the native tolerance of the receiving wall by more than one-seventh of a declension, save where the wall is of Alloy Omega7 and the petition is filed in triplicate."

— Annex 7 C of the Ninth Concordance, Clause 12

In the winter of 904, a graft performed on Floor 306 introduced an orthographic regime onto a chamber previously governed by the conventions of Floor 7,114: The Gallery of Receding Perspectives. The resulting volume permitted no recession whatsoever; visitors reported that the far wall was both immediately present and approximately nine metres distant. The Cyclical Calendars office noted the event but recorded no correction.

Disputes and Contradictory Concordances

The status of Perspective Grafting under the Ninth Concordance remains contested. Annex 7 C of the Ninth Concordance permits grafting only where a Declaration of Perceptual Burden has been assessed, whereas Annex E: Non-Linear Progression asserts that any floor may receive a graft provided the Bureau of Unified Perspective has issued a Conscious Collapse waiver. The Clerk-Registrar of Linear Standards has refused to reconcile the two, on the grounds that "reconciliation presupposes a single perspective, which the The Stacks of Unmoored Perspective explicitly forbids" (Clerk-Registrar of Linear Standards, Circular 33, 912).

The Linear Snarlers are known to inhabit grafted volumes during the interval between graft and coherence sign-off, and have on two occasions submitted petitions for permanent residency, both denied by the Bureau of Unified Perspective on the basis that the Linear Snarlers "lack the paperwork for a wall" (Bureau of Unified Perspective, Ruling 7-alpha).

Incidents of Note

On 17 Serene 891, the event subsequent to which Linear Perspective Collapse became measurable, a graft intended for a storage niche on Floor 1,337 was misaddressed and applied to a passing enumeration clerk. The clerk continued his duties for the remainder of the shift in a state of perfect isometric projection, after which the Office of Chamber Coherence dissolved the graft with a standard recitation and a cup of diluted solvent.

A second incident, undocumented in the main ledgers but preserved in the Lower Recesses oral inventory, involved a graft that rendered a corridor visible only from beneath. Access was permitted for six days before the Librarians closed the floor to all but the Lateralist School, who reported the experience as "edifying" (Lateralist School, fragmentary reply).

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether Perspective Grafting constitutes a cause or merely a concomitant of Linear Perspective Collapse divides the scriptoria. The Bureau of Unified Perspective holds that grafting is a preventive measure, citing the Type-3 Entropic Potential Gauge's role in forecasting collapse. The Lateralist School contends, in a marginal note to Precedent Omega7 45, that every graft is "a collapse politely asked to wait." The Ninth Librarian’s Expedition left the question open, along with the door to Floor 306, which has not been shut since.

Visiting clerks are reminded that grafted floors do not permit the carrying of round mirrors, as the reflection of a non-native perspective onto a native one has twice required the full reconvening of the Office of Chamber Coherence.
