Type-3 Entropic Potential Gauge

MS 1109.44 · Objects and instruments

Type-3 Entropic Potential Gauge is a calibrated instrument for the measurement and quantification of latent narrative or causal tension within a documented system, prior to its resolution into a Type 3 or Type 3 holding. Its primary function is to forecast the probability of a Linear Perspective Collapse event by detecting fluctuations in what is formally termed 'entropic potential.'

Design and Calibration

The standard Type-3 Gauge consists of a hermetically sealed chamber constructed from annealed narrative silica, within which a suspended filament of refined logical deduction oscillates. This filament is bathed in a reservoir of Grade-7 Chronostatic Fluid, identical to that used in the Type-2 Laminar Flow Gauge. The fluid's viscosity responds inversely to localized increases in unresolved potential. A calibrated scale, measured in cairns, surrounds the chamber, with the filament's deflection indicating the magnitude of entropic drift.

Each gauge must be certified against the Mercurial Standard Gauge housed in the Vault of Imminent Conclusions on Floor 17α. Per Ordinance 88.4 of the Third Concordance, recertification is required every 47 lunar cycles, a schedule synchronized with that of the Type-1 Chronostatic Gauge. The formal threshold for a Type 3 classification is defined as a measurable drift exceeding 2.3 cairns over a standard archival lunar cycle.

Operational Protocol

Deployment of a Type-3 Gauge is mandated during the Preliminary Stability Assessment for any holding suspected of harboring self-referential or recursively defined properties. The protocol, detailed in Annex Σ of the Fourth Concordance, requires the gauge to be placed within three paces of the holding's primary access point. Readings are taken at the onset of the crepuscular hour for seven consecutive days to establish a baseline laminarity.

Notably, the gauge is not a passive observer. Its presence within a field of high entropic potential can, according to the controversial Gerrant Hypothesis, catalyze the very collapse it is designed to predict. This led to the amendment known as Clause 47.b, which prohibits the use of a Type-3 Gauge within a holding already exhibiting Retroactive Drift exceeding 0.5 cairns as measured by a Type-2 Laminar Flow Gauge.

Historical Context and the Snarler Incidents

The earliest referenced use of a "potential gauge" appears in the fragmented logs pertaining to the so-called 'Snarler' activities of the 88th Descent. These logs describe the deployment of a prototype device to monitor unstable story-fragments in the Western Stacks, though the precise specifications are lost. Modern scholarship, particularly from the School of Latent Potential, argues these early devices were functionally identical to the Type-3, albeit without standardized cairn measurement.

The development of the contemporary Type-3 Gauge is directly linked to the investigations following the Δ-88 Shelf Collapse. It was the consistent, pre-collapse readings from a bank of twelve Type-3 Gauges that provided the empirical data necessary to codify the 2.3-cairn threshold now enshrined in the Concordances.

Interpretive Disputes

Significant scholarly disagreement exists regarding what, precisely, the gauge measures. The orthodox position, held by the Office of Metric Validation, is that it measures the probabilistic weight of unmade decisions or unwritten conclusions inherent to a narrative system. A rival faction, led by the Archivists of the Implicit, contends the gauge actually measures the observer's anticipatory anxiety projected onto the system, a criticism that also dogs the Hesitant Gauge.

This dispute has practical ramifications. The Polian Gauge, for instance, was designed as a hybrid instrument in an attempt to reconcile these views, though it was later repurposed for different functions. Furthermore, Annex Ω of the Third Concordance explicitly forbids the use of Type-3 readings as sole evidence for a Type B Pause, requiring corroboration from a Type-2 Laminar Flow Gauge to confirm environmental instability.

Related Instrumentation

The Type-3 Entropic Potential Gauge is part of a broader ecosystem of archival measurement. It is often deployed in tandem with a Type-1 Chronostatic Gauge to establish a full temporal-probabilistic profile. For large-scale or distributed holdings, a Potential Resonator Array may be employed, which essentially functions as a networked cluster of Type-3 sensors.

Its readings are a required data point in the manifest for a Type 1 holding, where it establishes baseline narrative inertia. Conversely, its role in monitoring Type 4 holdings is limited, as their potential is typically considered fully realized (or "spent"), registering near 0 cairns.
