Office of the Cartographerarchivist
MS 4719.83 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Office of the Cartographer-Archivist is the administrative body charged with the dual mandate of recording the physical layout of the Tower and preserving the conceptual integrity of its cartographic records. The office is notable for its unique structural doctrine, which holds that the act of mapping a location is inseparable from the act of archiving the concept of that location. Its headquarters occupy the entirety of Floor 188, also known as the Map Vault, though its field agents operate under downshifted licensure across multiple concurrent temporal layers.
Dual Mandate and Jurisdictional Paradox
Established under the obscure Clause 7.11.α (commonly, "The Atlas Proviso"), the office's mandate is explicitly divided into two interdependent functions. The Cartographic Division is responsible for field surveys, triangulation of non-Euclidean corridors, and the drafting of provisional floorplans. The Archival Division is tasked with authenticating these drafts, reconciling them with existing records in the Infinite Registry, and enforcing the Doctrine of Cartographic Finality, which states that a map, once ratified, defines the reality of the space it depicts within the Tower.
This creates a persistent jurisdictional paradox: the Cartographic Division cannot finalize a map without Archival authentication, but the Archival Division cannot authenticate a map of a space that does not yet formally exist. This paradox is resolved—or, according to critics, merely managed—through the use of Provisional Cartographic Licenses (PCLs). A PCL allows a survey to be filed as "conceptually pending," a state that permits both limited navigation rights and the activation of certain maintenance protocols for the unmapped region. The most famous application of this is the ongoing survey of the Silent Apex, which has held a PCL for 312 standard Tower years.
Notable Holdings and the Mappa Incognita
The office's primary holding is the Central Cartulary, a dynamic repository whose shelves are said to physically expand or contract in correlation with the Tower's own disputed growth. Alongside conventional atlases, it maintains several specialized collections:
- The Annals of Lost Passage: Records of stairwells, doors, and apertures that have been verified as absent.
- The Registry of Perpetual Edges: Logs of boundaries that define floors cataloguing concepts of infinity or limitless spaces.
- The Mappa Incognita: A single, perpetually blank vellum sheet housed in a hermetic chamber. It is designated as the authoritative map for all regions that are, by definition, unmappable. Its curation is the sole responsibility of the Senior Undersecretary for Absolute Negation.
A sub-office, the Office of New Supports, was briefly established to design specialized furniture for displaying maps of recursive or topologically unstable territories before being dissolved and its duties reabsorbed.
The Schism of 719
The office's most significant internal conflict, known as the Schism of 719, centered on the proper classification of Floor 719. The Cartographic Division's survey indicated a standard, if vast, administrative plaza housing the Grand Registrar's Office. The Archival Division's cross-reference with the Annals of Jurisprudence revealed that seventeen separate Concordances indirectly referenced Floor 719 as a "juridical abstraction" rather than a physical location.
“To map the floor is to invalidate the precedent; to archive the precedent is to deny the floor. We must therefore do both, and declare the contradiction a feature of the landscape.” – Ruling of the Arbitrator-Provisional, cited in Annex Δ to the Forty-Seventh Concordance.
The resulting compromise saw the office produce two equally valid records: a physical atlas page and a conceptual ledger entry stating the floor's non-physical nature. Both are filed under the same accession code, and which record is retrieved by a requisition clerk is purportedly non-deterministic.
Current Operations and Disputes
The office currently operates under a Dual-Authority Charter, a framework instituted after the Schism. It maintains several field stations, including a contentious outpost on the theoretical border of Floor 90, where it collaborates—and frequently clashes—with the Office of Structural Paradox regarding the implementation of the Mending Protocol.
A persistent scholarly dispute, championed by a faction within the Recursive Amendments Office, involves the Axiom of Recursive Validation. This axiom suggests that for a map of an archive (including the Map Vault itself) to be valid, it must contain within it a perfect, scaled-down map of itself, ad infinitum. The Office of the Cartographer-Archivist has issued a standing ruling that such production, while logically sound, falls under the purview of the Office of Perpetual Affairs and its authority over the Infinite Stamp, and is therefore an operational impossibility given current budgetary cycles.
Administrative Structure
The office is led by the Cartographer-Archivist, a title held by a single individual who must pass dual proficiency examinations in both geodesic drafting and ontic verification. Beneath this position are two co-equal Deputy Principals, one for Cartography and one for Archives, whose rivalry is considered a vital check on institutional overreach. Field agents, known as Scribe-Surveyors, hold hybrid ranks and are the only Tower personnel authorized to carry both measuring chains and authentication seals as standard issue.
