Lys’s Ambient Registers

Definition and scope
Lys's Ambient Registers is the collective designation for the four standing measurement registers maintained under the personal keeping of Lys, senior sub-curator of the third sub-basement annex to the Seventh Central Registry. The Registers record ambient phaneric load, resonant displacement, Dissonance saturation, and silence-adjacent value across the floors served by the Lys-Gamma Spiral. Their order of citation is fixed by the Concordance of Registers, and their handling is governed by the older provisions of the Foundational Registers.
The Registers are bound in grey vellum, four volumes to a set, and are renewed rather than amended: a volume that has been filled is sealed and shelved, and a fresh one opened beneath the same ordinal letter. The current set in ordinary use is designated Eta. Volumes Alpha through Delta are held in the annexe strongroom and are consulted only by dispute.
Standing order of the four
The Concordance of Registers settles, in its second clause, the order in which the four are read aloud, entered, and cited: phaneric first, resonant second, Dissonant third, silence-adjacent fourth. Prior to that Concordance, practice varied by annex, and the Gamma spiral had long preferred to lead with resonant displacement on the grounds that it was the slowest of the four to settle. The Concordance overruled this without addressing why.
The four registers are as follows:
- the phaneric register, expressed in units of ambient phaneric load and cross-checked against the Phantom Thermometer, which registers a fall in phaneric load wherever a Phantom Composition is being performed on the served floor;
- the resonant register, expressed in Lys Units, the unit taking its name from the foundational Resonance Packet “Lys-Omega” rather than from any measurement actually recorded in these volumes;
- the Dissonant register, expressed in luminous displacement (Ld) and calibrated against the shadow cast by the Hargrove Scale on Floor 18, which holds a consistent 3.1 Ld under ordinary atmospheric Dissonance;
- the silence-adjacent register, which is entered only on floors falling within the classification of the Floor of Total Silence and elsewhere is carried as a null.
Procedure of entry
Entries are made at the sixth bell of the working day and again at the eleventh, in the same hand, by whichever sub-curator holds the week. Each entry carries the floor number, the ordinal of the volume, the hour, and the four values in standing order, followed by the initials of the recording hand. Corrections are made by striking through and re-entering in the margin; erasure is prohibited under clause 9 of the Foundational Registers and has been the subject of two separate censures, one of them upheld.
The Registers are read against the Archival Registers of Cycle 312 at the close of each cycle. Where a divergence exceeds the tolerance set by the Ambient Parameter Stabilization, the divergent floor is flagged and referred upward. Flagged floors are not re-measured; they are merely flagged, and the flag stands until a later cycle agrees with an earlier one.
Disputed readings
A long-standing disagreement opposes the Gamma annex to the Gamma Registry over the treatment of the silence-adjacent value on non-contiguous floors. The annex holds that a null entered on a floor not itself classified under the Floor of Total Silence should be read as an absence of data. The Registry holds that it should be read as data recording an absence. The distinction matters chiefly in citation: under the Registry's reading, a null may be cited in support of a claim, which the annex regards as an abuse of the register's fourth position.
The dispute was rehearsed three times before the Third Concordance and once after, without resolution. Amendment 41.2, which created the office of Historiographer Lys, is silent on the point, though Historiographer Lys has since annotated two volumes in the margin with a note reading simply "not the same thing," initialled and undated.
A second and smaller controversy concerns the resonant register's unit. Because the Lys Unit derives its name from Resonance Packet “Lys-Omega” — the anticipated echo of the true name of Lys — readings taken before the packet's theoretical ratification are expressed in a unit that did not yet exist. The Ambient Cataloguing Haze Theory school treats this as a known and harmless anachronism of the archive. The dissenting view, associated with the scriptorium of the Whispering Ledgers, holds that no measurement can be validly expressed in a unit named for an event that has not occurred, and that the entire resonant column of volumes Alpha and Beta should be re-struck. This has not been done.
Custody and consultation
Custody passes by entry in the Gamma Registry, not by appointment, and the transfer is announced nowhere. Consultation of sealed volumes requires the countersignature of two sub-curators of different annexe, a condition that has occasionally left a single-handed post unable to open its own records for years at a time. Listener's Logs kept on the same floors are consulted alongside, since they record ambient conditions independently and are therefore useful for confirming or embarrassing an entry.
Visitors are admitted to the reading desk between the seventh and tenth bells. They may not turn a page of a volume still in use, and they may not read aloud from the silence-adjacent column while standing in the doorway.
