Integer Scroll

MS 9359.85 · Objects and instruments

The Integer Scroll is the physical artifact upon which the Assumed Integer is formally inscribed during the biennial Ceremony of the Assumed Integer, serving as the primary record of the Tower's non-existent numerical placeholder. Its custody and preparation are governed by the Office of the Provost of Precise Ambiguity under the provisions of Annex 2 to Clause 4, Thirteenth Concordance.

Physical Description

The Scroll is a single sheet of parchment measuring 33 by 48 centimeters, cut from the hide of a theoretical beast catalogued on the non-sequential Floor 707 (The Vivarium of Unborn Fauna). It is uniformly blank, exhibiting no watermark, laid lines, or chain lines, a property certified by the Guild of Theoretical Papyrologists. The parchment demonstrates a notable resistance to conventional inks; only the ceremonial ink formulated by the Department of Fiscal Phantasms adheres to its surface, and only for the duration of the Ceremony. The standard housing is a cylindrical case of annealed Void-Silver, 52 centimeters in length, stored within the Aperture Sigma-12 vault on Spiral 299.

Ritual Function

During the Ceremony, the Provost of Precise Ambiguity presents the Scroll, unrolled upon the Lectern of Provisional Sums. Following the recitation of the fiscal statement of the previous Tower cycle, the designated Inscriber—a role rotated among senior clerks of the Department—applies the symbol (Alpha) to the center of the parchment using a nib fashioned from a retired Calculation Prong. The inscription is not a numeric value, but a symbolic representation of the integer assumed to exist for ledger-balancing purposes. Immediately upon completion of the rite, the Scroll is re-cased. The inscribed symbol fades to imperceptibility within 72 hours, restoring the parchment to its original blank state, as verified by triennial inspection.

The Scroll receives the mark of that which is not, so that the accounts of what is may achieve a semblance of closure. Its emptiness is its utility.

Custodial Protocol

Per Ordinance Gamma-7, the Integer Scroll may only be removed from Aperture Sigma-12 for the Ceremony, for scheduled integrity verification, or in response to a Declared Numerical Emergency (DNE). Transport between the vault and the Ceremonial Atrium on Floor 1,144 requires a custodial escort of no fewer than two Librarian-Adjuncts and must follow the prescribed route via Stairwell 44. A complete log of all handlings, including the reason for removal and the names of all personnel in proximity, is entered into the MRAK under the classification Numericum Phantasma.

Disputes and Interpretations

The ontological status of the Scroll is a point of persistent scholarly contention. The dominant position, held by the Department of Fiscal Phantasms, maintains that the Scroll is a purely procedural instrument, a blank medium for a temporary ritual action. A minority view, advanced by the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild, argues that the Scroll is not blank but is, in fact, perpetually inscribed with all possible integers; the Ceremony merely serves to temporarily isolate and amplify one of them—the Assumed Integer—from this latent plenitude. This interpretation is supported by a controversial reading of the Winnowed Manuscript, which refers to a "manifold substrate of number." No empirical test has been devised to reconcile these views.

Related Artifacts

The Integer Scroll is one of three core artifacts associated with the Tower's abstract numerical governance. The others are the Scroll of Perfect Ascent (which catalogs theoretical ascents) and the Ledger of Balances Unseen (a companion volume to the Scroll, recording the justifications for each year's specific Assumed Integer). It is distinct from a Potential Floor File, which deals with disputed floor numerations, though both are subject to similar stamping and logging procedures. A failed proposal from the 124th Conclave sought to mandate the ritual incineration of the Integer Scroll upon the appointment of a new Provost, but this was rejected for creating undue "procedural exhaust."
