Infinite Regress of Detail
MS 6223.76 · Practices and doctrines
"The attempt to fully specify any concept leads inexorably to an infinite expansion of qualifications, each necessitating its own definition, until the original intent is lost beneath the scaffolding erected to support it."
— Subcommittee on Infinite Regress, Interim Finding 7.4a
The Infinite Regress of Detail is a procedural and ontological principle within the Tower's administrative taxonomy, formally recognized as one of the three axiomatic pillars of the Doctrine of Incompletability. It posits that any attempt to produce a definitive catalogue entry, procedural guideline, or architectural specification will inevitably generate a cascade of necessary clarifications, each requiring further elaboration, thereby preventing any final, closed statement.
Formal Recognition and Codification
The principle was first isolated as a distinct regulatory anomaly by the Subcommittee on Infinite Regress in TR 1321, during its investigation into the stalled cataloguing of the Silence of Floor π. The Subcommittee's final report noted that the entry for the Silence had ballooned to 47 supplemental annexes, each defining terms used in the previous annex, with no terminal point in sight. This led to its codification in the Annex of Perpetual Revision under Clause 11, alongside the Observer-Induced Mutation and the Principle of Uncaptured Context.
Operationally, the Regress manifests when a Librarian, seeking to eliminate ambiguity, adds a clarifying detail to a record. This detail itself contains terms or concepts that are not fully defined within the Tower's current concordant framework, thus necessitating further entries. These secondary entries then require their own clarification, initiating the Regress. The phenomenon is measured in "Spirals," with a single Spiral representing one complete cycle of definition-then-qualification. The cataloguing project for the Detail Series 44.7 famously reached 14 recorded Spirals before being suspended by order of the Scriptorium of Infinite Regress.
Procedural Mitigations
The Tower's bureaucracy has developed several sanctioned methods for managing, though never resolving, the Regress. The primary mechanism is the application of a "Provisional Closure Stamp" (PCS-Δ), which halts further elaboration on an entry while acknowledging its inherent incompleteness. The authority to apply a PCS-Δ is vested in senior archivists of the Academy of Procedural Anomalies.
A second, more contentious method is the invocation of "Axiomatic Quality 'Delta'," a status affirmed during the Petitions of Infinite Regress crisis of TR 1456. This quality allows a subject to be accepted as a foundational element for procedural purposes, despite the unresolved Regress surrounding its own definition. The Infinite Registry operates almost entirely on this basis.
The Architectural Dimension
The Regress is not merely a documentary phenomenon but has physical correlates within the Tower's structure. The Atrium of Infinite Regress is the most cited example, where the dimensions of the chamber are defined in reference to the ceremonial pacing rituals conducted within it, which are themselves defined by the chamber's dimensions—a recognized architectural Spiral. Similarly, the stairwell connecting Forty Seventh Floor to the Atrium of Recursive Truth contains dedicatory plaques that describe each other in an endless circular reference, a fixture maintained by the Quiet Guard as a instructional example.
Scholarly Disputes
The central debate concerning the Infinite Regress of Detail is whether it represents a flaw in the Tower's epistemic systems or their fundamental, generative principle. The Operationalist School, now largely discredited after several of its proponents became trapped in the Atrium of Infinite Regress attempting to operationally define "operational definition," argues the former. The prevailing Perpetualist view, underpinning the Doctrine of Incompletability, holds the latter: that the Regress is the engine of the Tower's endless growth, ensuring the archive can never be finished and thus never become obsolete.
A secondary, more technical dispute concerns the classification of the Infinite Stamp. Some archivists, primarily from the School of Infinite Recursion, contend its self-replicating verification matrix is a pure manifestation of the Regress. Others classify it as a related but distinct phenomenon of "Simultaneous Infinite Specification," as its regress is lateral (creating identical copies) rather than deepening (creating new layers of detail). This matter remains unresolved in the concordances.
Current Directive Status
Per Concordance 78, Amendment 12, all catalogue entries suspected of triggering an Infinite Regress of Detail beyond Spiral 3 must be referred to the dormant-but-still-recognized Scriptorium of Infinite Regress for assessment. In practice, since the Scriptorium's dormancy, this triggers an automatic application of a Provisional Closure Stamp and a footnote citing the Infinite Regress of Comparison as a related but separate procedural hazard. The Regress itself remains an active, unclosed file.
