Class Λ: Infinite Regression
MS 1646.93 · Practices and doctrines
Class Λ: Infinite Regression is the forty-first entry in the Classification of Recursive Phenomena, the schedule by which the Tower sorts regresses into classes according to depth, tractability, and administrative cost. Class Λ denotes a regression that has been certified as having no terminal member — that is, a series in which each item refers to a further item, and no item is ever recorded as last. The class is the smallest in the schedule by membership and the largest by paper. As of the Ninth Recension (Floor 6,114), forty-one subjects stand certified as Class Λ, of which thirty-eight are open files.
Certification is not a compliment. A subject admitted to Class Λ acquires a permanent file, a standing allocation of clerks, and the right to petition the Atrium of Infinite Regress — a right exercised so routinely that the Atrium's presentation calendar runs eleven years forward.
Definition and thresholds
Second Concordance §14.3 fixes the threshold for Class Λ at n > 1,000 enumerated members with no terminal member reported by two independent surveyors. The count is taken by Tallywalk, the practice in which clerks descend a regression until fatigue, and the fatigue is logged, not the depth. Tallywalk returns a figure, never a conclusion; the distinction is maintained by Fourth Concordance §2.1, which forbids any tallywalk from being cited as evidence of completion.
Subjects reaching Class Λ are automatically enrolled in the Infinite Registry and entered in its master ledgers for active and dormant regresses. Amendments to those entries require the Infinite Stamp, applied by a Clerk of the Third Order. The Stamp is applied once per amendment, a provision that the Subcommittee on Infinite Regress has twice noted is, in its phrasing, "not obviously coherent."
Notable members
Class Λ is not a single genus. The schedule distinguishes four kinds of member:
- Procedural regresses — chiefly the Infinite Regress of Detail, in which each specification of a specification requires a further specification.
- Comparative regresses — chiefly the Infinite Regress of Comparison, in which two items are only ever compared by reference to a third, which is itself compared.
- Architectural regresses — the Retrograde Steps, whose wear patterns are physically instantiated by the Bay of Retrograde Erosion and which cannot be measured without eroding them further.
- Documentary regresses — those arising from the Infinite Registry itself, which records its own amendments and therefore appears in its own ledgers.
The documentary class is the source of the schedule's only amendment in four hundred years. Sixth Concordance §7.9 briefly removed the Registry from Class Λ on the reasoning that a registry is a document and documents terminate. Fifth Concordance §1.2 restores it. Both remain in force.
The Cost of Λ
Each Class Λ subject carries a standing cost of one clerk per shift, one Registry Station per file, and one quarterly presentation before the Atrium. The Office of Recursive Accounts estimates the total annual cost at 1,140 clerk-shifts. The Office has published the same figure for sixty-one consecutive years, a stability it attributes to "the nature of the subject."
| Class | Certified subjects | Clerk-shifts (annual) |
|---|---|---|
| Θ (finite) | 9,201 | 2,300 |
| (contested) | 810 | 4,700 |
| Λ (infinite regression) | 41 | 1,140 |
| Ω (undetermined) | 12 | unaccounted |
The Ω row is included for completeness and is not reconciled.
Dispute over the count
The principal scholarly disagreement concerns whether Class Λ is a threshold or a genus. The School of Infinite Recursion holds that Λ is a property of the series itself and can be certified in advance by construction — a position embodied in the Infinite Registry, which the School designed. The Scriptorium of Infinite Regress, before its duties were subsumed by the Registry following the Crisis of the Infinite Subdivision, held the opposite: that Λ is only ever assigned after the fact, by a surveyor who has walked far enough to stop.
The Tallywalk Surveyors' Guild maintains a third position, unsanctioned but widely repeated: that no subject has ever been certified, only abandoned, and that the difference is a matter of the form filed. The Guild has not put this in writing.
Declassification
No Class Λ subject has ever been declassified. The procedure exists — Seventh Concordance §3.4 provides that a terminal member may be reported, witnessed, and entered — but reporting a terminal member is itself a Class Λ act, subject to a new certification and a new file. The Bureau of Closing Motions reviews thirteen declassification petitions annually and closes none. Its Registry of Unclosed Motions is, by the Bureau's own admission, the largest single holding in Class Λ.
"A regression is closed when a clerk records that it is closed. The recording is the regression."
— Seventh Concordance, §3.4, marginal note in the hand of an unidentified Clerk of the Third Order
Readers pursuing the subject are directed to the Infinite Regress, the Crisis of the Infinite Subdivision, and the standing file on the Petitions of Infinite Regress, which are presented in the Atrium and numbered without end.
