Hypothetical Artifacts

Definition and scope
Hypothetical Artifacts is the collective designation for objects, fragments, and documentary units held within the Tower under the condition that their occurrence remains provisional. The term does not describe a material category but an archival status: an artifact is hypothetical insofar as its cataloguing precedes the confirmation of the event, process, or decision from which it purportedly descends. The Bureau of Hypothetical Durability maintains that the classification is procedural rather than ontological, a position recorded in the Concordance on Provisional Holdings, Annex 2. Hypothetical Artifacts are distributed across several jurisdictions. Physical specimens are held under the Stasis Quarantine on Sub-Level 14 and are labeled as hypothetical relics. Documentary specimens — including the Hypothetical Manuscript — fall under the archival protocols of the Guild of Theoretical Papyrologists. Static, non-dynamic specimens are additionally supervised by the Custodians of Static Artifacts through the Regulatory Artifacts Division.Classification
Every Hypothetical Artifact receives a Hypothetical Durability rating, assigned through the Hypothetical Durability Assessment and used to estimate the artifact's capacity to survive its own non-occurrence. The scale terminates in two operational classes: Class Ω designates artifacts whose originating event is considered all but settled, while Class Θ designates artifacts whose projected durability is so slight that they are archived primarily to record the failure of their own anticipation. Load-bearing estimates are governed by The Principle of Hypothetical Load, which holds that an artifact's archival weight increases as the probability of its originating event decreases. The Bureau of Hypothetical Durability certifies hypothetical load prior to classification; the Court of Hypothetical Jurisdiction reviews contested certifications but does not initiate them. Contranymic specimens — those exhibiting mutually exclusive properties — are catalogued separately within the hypothetical series and are excluded from standard load certification by the terms of the Fifth Concordance, Annex 7.Temporal referent
Artifacts without a standard temporal referent are contextualized under Antecedent Time, a hypothetical temporal continuum predating the establishment of Tower Standard Time and Primary Chronology. The practice remains in force, though its application to hypothetical artifacts has produced recurring administrative complications. The Doctrine of Necessary Precedent requires that an Antecedent Time citation be treated as binding precedent for related holdings, which in practice means that a single uncertain dating can propagate across an entire shelf. Sub-floor locational data for such holdings is coordinated by the Office of Hypothetical Geography, which shares jurisdiction over the spatial register with the Bureau of Hypothetical Frameworks.Anomalies
Hypothetical Artifacts that deviate from expected durability, load, or provenance are referred to the Compendium of Hypothetical Anomalies. The Compendium records approximately 1,140 entries, of which roughly one third concern artifacts whose classification was amended more than four times. Illumination standards for anomaly inspection follow the Accord on the Standardization of Hypothetical Lumens, which specifies lumen tolerances for readings conducted within the Stasis Quarantine. Related holdings are indexed under Substrate-Dependent Artifacts and Tier 3: Epistemic Artifacts.Notable disputes
The most consequential disagreement concerns whether a hypothetical artifact can be promoted to full archival standing without the occurrence of its originating event. The Bureau of Hypothetical Durability holds that promotion is impossible in principle, since durability ratings presuppose continued provisionality. The Guild of Theoretical Papyrologists contests this on the grounds that certain documentary specimens — the Hypothetical Manuscript foremost among them — have acquired sufficient internal consistency to be cited as precedent independent of the events they describe. The dispute was submitted to the Ninth Concordance, which resolved the matter in Clause 14 and then reversed itself in Clause 19 of the same document. Neither clause has been amended since, and both are routinely cited.Cataloguers are reminded that hypothetical holdings on Sub-Level 14 are not to be relocated during the winter quarter, as the corridor lights between Vault 6 and Vault 11 do not respond to the standard switch."An artifact held in provisional status shall not be cited as settled, except where the citation itself would otherwise render it settled."
