Hall of Recursive Echoes Event
MS 9066.16 · Practices and doctrines
The Hall of Recursive Echoes Event is the formal designation given to the manifestation that occupied the corridor now catalogued as the Hall of Recursive Echoes, spanning the northern approach to Floor 450 and the stairhead of Floor 451, between the winter of 1098 and the spring of 1109. It is recorded in the Register of Manifestations as entry M-7.103.001, and is the earliest entry in that Register for which a complete instrumental record survives. The Event is distinguished from the resulting Hall by a convention of the Bureau of Temporal Accord: the Event is the period of manifestation, the Hall is the place that remains. Visitors to the Hall should note that the corridor does not always lie where the plan shows it, and that a numbered tag must be affixed to the outer garment before entry.
Origin and first observation
The Event was first noted by Warden Adela of the Fourth Stair, who in the winter of 1098 recorded a doubled corridor on Floor 450 — the passage appearing to repeat at intervals of roughly eleven paces, each repetition bearing a faint deterioration of its predecessor's acoustics. Adela's notebook entry for the eleventh of that month is generally taken as the first documentary evidence:
"Walked the north approach twice and heard my own footfall four times. The fourth was not mine. Have marked the wall and will not mark it again until the mark is returned to me."
— Warden Adela of the Fourth Stair, notebook, winter 1098
The mark was returned to her on the third day, slightly weathered. The Event was thereafter treated as a matter for the Register rather than for ordinary corridor maintenance, and the approach was closed to unpurposed traffic pending assessment.
Assessment and the eleven-day period
The Bureau of Temporal Accord filed an initial assessment in the spring of 1099 estimating the recursion period of the Event at three days, on the basis of three observations conducted at three-day intervals — a method the Bureau later conceded was "self-confirming in the strict sense" (Bureau of Temporal Accord, Assessment 99-4, Annex 2). Subsequent measurement by the Division of Subjunctive Scope, which entered the corridor in the winter of 1102 to test conditional utterances, produced periods ranging from four days to nineteen, with the Bureau's own instruments returning three throughout. The discrepancy is among the most cited in the measurement literature and remains unresolved.
Concordance 117 settled the matter administratively by extending the recursion period measurement for the Hall to eleven days. It did not reconcile the instruments. A note appended to the Concordance by an unnamed Librarian observes only that "the period is eleven days, whatever the period is" (Concordance 117, Annex 3). Whether this is a definition, a finding, or a scribal error is a matter of continuing comment; see below.
Effects and discontinuities
The Event's principal effect is the repetition of sound with cumulative alteration. A voice raised in the corridor returns not once but in series, each return faintly older than the last; by the seventh return, utterances are reported to carry cadences the speaker did not use. The Division of Subjunctive Scope's report of winter 1102 notes that conditional utterances behave differently from declaratives: a sentence beginning "if" may return in the subjunctive of a speaker not present, and one such return was transcribed and filed by the Division under seal. The transcript is not available to readers, and the Division declines to describe it.
Portions of the Event's later phase were examined alongside the phenomena recorded at Floor 707 the Hall of Mirrored Intent, whose mirrored intentions are held by the Vault of Precedents to be a distinct class of occurrence and not a species of recursion. The distinction has been disputed twice and upheld twice, most recently in Concordance 441 Amendment 7, which refers in passing to the corridor's "Chamber of Conditional Echoes" — a name applied nowhere else and understood to be an error of the amending scribe.
The Finality petition
In the spring of 1109 the Event's recursions began to arrive before their originals, a condition catalogued elsewhere as Recursive Causality. Ilse of the Ninth Landing, present Warden of the Hall, petitioned the Hall of Echoes for a declaration of Librarianic Finality, and the declaration was pronounced in the winter of the same year, closing the Event as a manifestation. The Hall remained. The Hall of Conditional Echoes has since filed a report on the proceedings, noting that the declaration's wording was itself repeated three times in delivery and that the third repetition differed from the first in a respect the report does not specify.
Post-Finality recursions are classed as Lingering Echoes and do not require renewed registration. A modest holding of unclaimed returns, chiefly footsteps and one sustained note, is administered under Unclaimed Echoes.
Scholarly dispute
Three readings of the Event are current. The first holds that Concordance 117's eleven days is a measurement and that the Bureau's three was simply wrong — a position maintained, unsurprisingly, by the Division of Subjunctive Scope. The second, favoured in the Hall of Perpetual Review, holds that the Concordance is a definition retroactively applied, and that the Event had no period before 1104 but acquired one afterward, a view that requires the earlier observations to be treated as provisional. The third, advanced in a marginal recension held at the Hall of Conditional Precedents, holds that both figures are correct and describe successive dispatches of the same corridor, the eleven-day recursion being the return of the three-day one.
The third reading explains the doubled corridor of 1098 more neatly than the others and is disliked for that reason. No reading has been adopted. The Great Recursive Pause of the intervening years is sometimes adduced in support of the second, though the Pause is not recorded as having touched Floor 450 at all.
