Floor 707 the Hall of Mirrored Intent
MS 6493.42 · Places and structures
Floor 707, the Hall of Mirrored Intent is an archival level dedicated to the curation and study of documents generated by, for, or about reflections, echoes, and conceptual doppelgängers. It serves as the primary repository for The Correspondence of Mirrored Intent and houses the administrative offices of the Provisional Curators of Duality. The floor’s primary function, as outlined in Concordance 7, Annex γ, is to “preserve the record of intent as it exists in its primary and secondary states, without prejudice to the ontological priority of either.”
Layout and Architecture
The Hall is arranged in a radially symmetric design around a central, circular reading room known as the Atrium of Reciprocal Comprehension. The atrium’s floor is polished to a perfect specular finish, and its domed ceiling is lined with alternating panels of clear and silvered glass, creating an effect of infinite vertical recursion. Twelve arched corridors, designated Apertures α through λ, lead from the atrium to the specialized subsidiary halls.
Notable among these are the West Wing of Unanswered Replies (Apertures -), which contains drafts, fragments, and letters for which no response was ever catalogued, and the East Wing of Anticipatory Salutations (Apertures β-γ), which archives preparatory notes and abandoned openings. The administrative annex for the Curators is located behind a non-reflective black door in Aperture , a design choice mandated by the now-superseded Seventh Addendum to the Third Concordance to prevent “procedural feedback loops.”
Primary Holdings
The floor’s most significant holding is, of course, the master copy of The Correspondence of Mirrored Intent, kept under Sigil Ξ.44.7 in a climate-controlled vitrine in the central atrium. However, its collections are extensive. They include:
- The Ledger of Echoed Declarations: A 47-volume set documenting instances where formal pronouncements from higher floors were immediately followed by identical, yet uncatalogued, pronouncements from lower floors.
- The Fragmentary Dialogues of the Silent Twin: A collection of wax-cylinder recordings purported to contain one side of a conversation, where the respondent’s answers are inferred through gaps in the speaker’s cadence.
- Sealed copies of all Precedential Rulings issued from Floor 407, “The Hall of Mirrors”, maintained here to ensure a “doctrinal counterweight” (Concordance 44, Clause 19).
Administration and the Curators
Day-to-day operations are managed by the Provisional Curators of Duality, a specialized cadre often recruited from the ranks of Reversing Clerks. Their duties, as per their charter, involve not just cataloguing but also “the active maintenance of conceptual parity.” This has led to the peculiar practice of “corrective duplication,” wherein a document judged to have undue primacy is manually copied by a Curator while observing their own hand in a mirror, with the copy then shelved as the “authoritative counterpart.” The efficacy of this practice is a matter of ongoing debate between the Substantivist School of Floor 419: The Hall of Plenitude and the more proceduralist scholars of the Hall of Verified Substance.
Scholarly Disputes
The central ontological dispute surrounding the Hall’s collections concerns the nature of originality. The traditionalist view, supported by citations from the Hall of Precedents, holds that the first instance of an intent (the “primal draft”) holds inherent authority. The revisionist school, whose arguments are archived in the Hall of Unsettled Arguments, posits that intent is only fully realized upon its recognition by another—even if that other is a reflection—granting the mirrored copy a co-equal, if not superior, status. This debate directly impacts archival protocol, such as whether the reflection’s unreciprocated postscript in the 9th letter of the Correspondence should be given its own unique sigil.
A further, more procedural controversy involves the Hall’s jurisdictional overlap with the Bureau of Apparent Duplication on Floor 407, “The Hall of Mirrors”. Concordance 12 clearly assigns “matters of optical illusion and geometric recurrence” to Floor 407, while Concordance 22 claims “all documents born of conscious self-apprehension” for Floor 707. The resulting bureaucratic ambiguity is typically resolved on a case-by-case basis, with unresolved cases forwarded to the Hall of Procedural Anomalies.
Notable Expeditions and Access
Access to the primary stacks of Floor 707 requires a dual-permit: Form 707-A (Intent to Consult) and its mirror-image counterpart, Form 707- (Consultation of Intent), which must be submitted simultaneously. The expedition led by Senior Curator Elara Vance in Year 12 of the Current Catalogue sought to trace the source of the “whispering specifications” noted in the margins of several mirrored documents. Her team’s final report concluded the phenomenon was likely an acoustic artifact of the atrium, though dissenting notes filed by her deputy reference “conceptual bleed” from the Hall of Whispering Margins on Floor 909, The Hall of Unsettled Arguments. The full report is available for cross-reference in the Hall of Unresolved Queries.
