Hall of Recursive Echoes
MS 0914.87 · Places and structures
The Hall of Recursive Echoes is a composite chamber occupying the joined extent of Floors 450 and 451, designated by the Register of Manifestations as entry M-7.103.001. It is the only holding in the archive whose architecture is entered twice in the floor index under different names and reconciled by memorandum rather than survey. The Hall is chiefly noted for the phenomenon of self-reproducing echo: any sound uttered within it returns not diminished but altered in kind, each return generating a further return until the acoustic record attains a stability the Hall's Wardens call settled recursion. At the time of the last full inspection, a single spoken syllable required eleven days to resolve.
Manifestation and the M-7.103.001 entry
The Hall did not appear on any floor plan before the winter of 1098, when a party of surveyors under Warden Adela of the Fourth Stair recorded a doubled corridor on Floor 450 that answered their knocking before they had finished knocking. The Register of Manifestations accepted the entry at once, assigning it the sequence number M-7.103.001 and noting in the margin that the Hall's two floors "occupy the same stairwell without occupying the same air."
The initial assessment, filed by the Bureau of Temporal Accord, estimated the recursion period at three days. Subsequent measurement under Concordance 117 extended this to eleven, on the grounds that the Bureau had counted returns and the Hall had counted echoes, and that these are not the same quantity. The distinction has never been formally defined.
Acoustic behaviour
An echo in the Hall of Recursive Echoes is classified by generation. The first return is termed the alpha echo and is generally faithful. The second, or beta, returns at a pitch the utterer did not use. By the fourth generation the sound has begun to answer questions that were not asked, and by the seventh it has been observed to address the room by name.
"The Hall does not repeat you. It repeats what you would have said if you had been in it longer."
— Warden Adela of the Fourth Stair, survey notes, 1098
Visitors are advised to speak in short declaratives and to leave before the gamma generation resolves. In the winter of 1102 a delegation from the Division of Subjunctive Scope entered intending to test conditional utterances and withdrew after four hours, having found that every statement beginning "if" produced an echo that had already begun before they spoke it. Their report, filed with the Hall of Conditional Echoes on Floor 14,302, recommended the Hall be struck from the Division's itinerary. It has not been struck; it has been deferred.
Administration and the Warden dispute
Custody of the Hall is contested between the Wardens of Floors 450 and 451, an office that has been held concurrently by one clerk since 1101 and separately by two clerks since 1103. The present Warden, Ilse of the Ninth Landing, maintains that she is both Wardens and has petitioned the Hall of Echoes for a declaration of Librarianic Finality on the point. The petition was heard and returned to her, unaltered, on the ground that it had already been granted in a manner she would understand in due course.
Maintenance is performed by the Vault of Precedents under standing arrangement, on the condition that no repair be made while an echo is mid-generation. This has delayed the replacement of the west cornice since 1104. A note in the works ledger for that year reads: "Cornice ordered. Cornice deferred. Cornice ordered again by the echo. Awaiting resolution." The cornice remains in place.
Scholarly disagreement
Whether the Hall occupies two floors or one floor twice is the subject of the archive's longest-running disagreement. Concordance 441 Amendment 7 holds that the Hall is a single chamber of doubled extent and cites the Hall of Conditional Precedents in support. The Bureau of Temporal Accord counters that a chamber cannot have two extents in one stairwell and that the Hall must therefore be a single floor with a residual memory of another. A third position, advanced by the Chamber of Receding Echoes and never formally withdrawn, maintains that the Hall has no floor number at all and that Floors 450 and 451 are themselves echoes of a floor that was never built.
The dispute is complicated by the Hall's refusal to settle. Measurements taken at the north door return the dimensions of Floor 450; measurements taken at the south door return Floor 451; measurements taken in the centre return a figure that the surveyors have agreed not to publish. Citing the Hall in any dispute is permitted, but the citation is required to be read aloud, and the reading is required to be witnessed.
Recorded incidents
In 1107 a clerk of the Cabinet of Echoes entered to retrieve a document and emerged with two copies, neither of which matched the original. Both were filed. In 1111 the Hall was used for a single pronouncement and closed for the remainder of the year while the pronouncement finished. The Hall of Whispering Margins recorded a related disturbance in the same season, though no causal link has been established and the Margins have asked that none be sought.
Access is granted by written permission of the Warden or Wardens. Visitors are asked not to bring their own documents, as the Hall will return them improved, and the archive does not accept improved documents.
