Guild of Latticed Perspectives

MS 2032.28 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Guild of Latticed Perspectives is a chartered body of the Tower, seated on Floor 3,208, whose members survey, index, and adjudicate the intersections of overlapping sightlines. It is best known for filing the initial survey claims for The Atrium of Shifting Perspectives in Cycle 4,992, and for holding, under the Custody Concordance, the assigned care of abstract geometries classified as Unitary entities. Its emblem is a grid of nine apertures, of which only six are drawn.

Foundation and charter

The Guild was constituted by Second Concordance of Chartered Bodies, Clause 14, which grants "to the latticed trades the right of first survey over any space admitting more than one reading at once, provided the readings be entered in the ledger before they be entered in the argument." The proviso has been litigated in every century since. The Margin Commentators Guild maintains that the clause was intended only to regulate window-mullions and has been stretched beyond recognition; the Guild of Latticed Perspectives has replied, twice, that a window is an argument.

Membership is by examination and by sponsor. The examination is administered on Floor 3,208 in a room with no windows, a fact the Guild does not consider ironic and has said so in writing.

Survey of the Atrium

The Guild's survey claims of Cycle 4,992 remain its principal title to precedence. The claims, filed under ledger mark GL-4992/17, record the Atrium as a Type-III Mutable Atrium and fix its lattice intersections at four hundred and six. Later surveys have found between three hundred and ninety and eleven thousand, depending on the hour. The Guild has declined to revise its figure, noting in its defence that a survey is a record of what was seen and not a warranty of what would be seen next.

This position was upheld, narrowly, in the matter of Ordinance 412.7 against the Cartographer-Surveyor Guild, though the ruling was later disturbed by Ordinance Kappa-19 and has never been fully restored. The dispute over the Gallery of Unfixed Perspectives, which the Cartographer-Surveyor Guild claims under its proprietary rights over temporally unfixed paradoxes, is generally regarded as the same quarrel continued by other means.

"The latticed surveyor does not assert that the space is fixed. He asserts only that his record of its unfixing was made at a stated hour by a named hand. Any guild may do as much, and several have."

— Third Concordance, Annex 9, gloss on Clause 14

Custody of Unitary entities

Under the Custody Concordance, the Guild may be assigned the custody of abstract geometries classified as Unitary — forms that admit of no proper parts and therefore cannot be apportioned among claimants. Custody here means the keeping of the register, the sealing of the vault, and the responsibility for explaining, when asked, why the geometry cannot be divided. In practice the third duty absorbs the whole of the Guild's annual budget.

The Guild's own guidance, issued as Circular GL-31 and revised eleven times, instructs custodians to "hold the entity entire, and to state the reason for its entirety in not fewer than forty words and not more than one page." A custodian of the ninth rank, E. Marrow, was reprimanded in Cycle 5,441 for submitting a reason of thirty-nine words and appending the word "thus" to the margin. The reprimand stands; the custody was not disturbed.

Disputes and jurisdictions

The Guild's relations with neighbouring bodies are governed less by agreement than by a settled habit of simultaneous filing. It contests the Reflector Guild's claim to first reading of mirrored corridors, on the ground that a lattice includes its reflection and a reflection does not include its lattice. It has an unresolved overlap with the Dialectic Guild concerning spaces that change when described, the Guild of Latticed Perspectives holding that description is a survey and the Dialectic Guild holding that it is a thesis.

The Heretical Cartographers, who place the primary aperture of the Gallery of Unfixed Perspectives within Floor 7,114: The Gallery of Receding Perspectives, are not recognised by the Guild and are named in its index only in the appendix of excluded readings. The appendix is the longest section of the index.

Relations with the Guild of Harmonic Theorists are cordial and were formalised in Cycle 5,109, when the two bodies agreed to share the Dual-Frequency Hum from the Gallery of Unfixed Perspectives as a joint instrument of measurement. The agreement specifies that the hum is to be recorded, not resolved.

Practice and equipment

Survey work is conducted with the lattice frame, a brass rectangle strung with nine cords, of which at least six must be under tension at the moment of reading. Frames are numbered and may not be lent between floors. A visiting surveyor from another guild is required to leave their boots at the threshold of the survey room and to state, aloud, the number of apertures they expect to find.

The Guild's standing inventory of survey frames, as at the last audit of Cycle 5,502, is as follows:

  • Frames in service: 214
  • Frames under repair: 31
  • Frames held in trust for the Constructivist Guild: 6
  • Frames lost to the Atrium and not recovered: 9
  • Frames whose number cannot be read: 2

Contemporary standing

The Guild retains its seat and its precedence but has not filed a new survey claim since Cycle 5,488. Its officers describe the pause as a period of consolidation; the Margin Commentators Guild describes it as an admission. Both descriptions are entered in the ledger, in the order received, which is the only accommodation the Guild has ever been willing to make.
