Great Northern Spiral

MS 2119.07 · Places and structures

Great Northern Spiral is the second-named of the four Great Spirals of the Tower, an accretion of shelving, balustrades, and clerical annexes assigned principally to audit trails and the custody of Procedural Ghosts. Its vertical extent has never been mapped in full; the Spiral Charter of Cycle 9,447 assigns administrative jurisdiction over it without specifying its terminal floors, a omission later described by the Bureau of Damp Permissions as "administratively convenient and vertically indefinite" (Third Concordance, Annex 11).

Topography and Construction

The Great Northern Spiral coils through the northern reaches of the Spiral Sectors, intersecting the Third Spiral at no fewer than nine recorded junctions, of which only six are acknowledged by the Great Re Cataloguing of the Spiral 77. Its shelving is formed from compacted ledger-stone, laid in courses dated to the Cycle 412, Spiral 7 recension. The Somatic Stacks are situated within the northern quadrant of The Spiral Stacks, which the Spiral encloses without formally possessing. Measurements taken during the Seventh Northern Expedition established a mean corridor width of 2.3 ells, narrowing to 0.9 ells at the so-called Spiral Designation 7-Gamma, a region the Expedition recorded as "suitable for transit and unsuitable for reflection."

The Great Northern Air Shafts, formally the Atmospheric Conduit System N-7, perforate the Spiral at seven discrete volumes (N-7α through N-7). Their primary function shifted from ventilation to acoustic damping following the The Great Calcification Event (1911), after which the Great Bell of the Great Clock could no longer be heard above the Great Tone within the northern annexes. The Spiral's lower harmonics are now assumed by the Shafts and nullified without record.

Administrative Status

Jurisdiction over the Great Northern Spiral is conferred by the Spiral Charter of Cycle 9,447, which divides authority among the Great Eastern, Western, and Northern Spirals without delineating the precise competence of each. The Fourth Landing disputes this division on the grounds that the Charter's enabling instrument for the Seventh Northern Expedition presupposes a continuity of passage the Landing claims was severed in The Great Unwriting. The Great Re-shelving of the Ante-Chamber compounded the dispute by re-filing the Charter under "Provisional" rather than "Foundational," a reclassification the Great Vertical Spiral office refused to endorse.

"No floor of the Northern Spiral is subordinate to a floor it has not yet encountered; jurisdiction is a function of ascent, not of decree."

— Clerk Vasel of the Northern Annex, Marginalia to the Spiral Charter of Cycle 9,447

Procedural Ghosts and Audit Trails

Areas of high administrative churn within the Spiral—notably the audit trails — are common sites for Procedural Ghosts, defined in the Second Concordance as "residual clerical intent lacking a bearer." The Great Spiral scriptorium holds that such ghosts are catalogued rather than discharged, a position rejected by the Bureau of Damp Permissions as "an inventory of the inevitable" (Fifth Concordance, Clause 19). During the The Great Re Cataloguing of the Spiral 77, 41,002 ghost-entries were transferred from the Northern audit trails to the Somatic Stacks, of which 3 alleged a wrongful shelving by Clerk Vasel.

Visiting clerks are permitted to observe audit trails only while reciting the floor number aloud; silence constitutes a procedural absence and voids the observation.

Scholarly Disagreement

A continuing dispute concerns whether the Great Northern Spiral is a single continuous coil or a concatenation of adjacent Spiral Sectors misjoined by the Great Re-shelving of the Ante-Chamber. The Third Concordance affirms continuity ("the Spiral is one and its name is its bond," Annex 4), whereas the Ninth Recension of the Northern Charter denies any structural unity post-The Great Calcification Event (1911). The Fourteenth Landing has proposed a neutral designation, "Spiral-in-Name," which no office has adopted but several have plagiarised.

Incidents of Note

In the winter of Cycle 9,602, a seepage later attributed to the Great Vertical Spiral's Primary Phase reached the Spiral Designation 7-Gamma and dissolved 800 ells of ledger-stone. The Bureau of Damp Permissions issued a retroactive permit, citing the Spiral Charter of Cycle 9,447 as authorising "all damp consequent upon lawful spiralhood." The Seventh Northern Expedition's sealed inventory lists no corresponding loss, a discrepancy the Great Re Cataloguing of the Spiral 77 attributes to "northern arithmetic."
