Lock

MS 3075.05 · Objects and instruments

Lock is a fortified chamber situated within inter-floor transit arteries that physically manifests the Cerebral Canal Lock System, regulating the passage of non-material data, abstract concepts, and unresolved paradoxes between ideologically segregated sectors of the Tower. The Librarians hold that no floor may be considered securely catalogued until every Lock upon its ascent and descent has been entered into the Master Registry of Conveyance Routes by the Canal Lock Authority.

Classification of Locks

Locks are divided by the Canal Lock Authority into three recensions: the Simple Seal, the Dual-Chambered Reliquary, and the Aperture Alpha. The Simple Seal governs ordinary conceptual transit and is the most numerous, with 14,402 instances recorded as of the Twelfth Recension of the Master Registry of Conveyance Routes. The Dual-Chambered Reliquary of Implied Sovereignty houses the Lock of Negation, secured upon its right chamber and requiring the Keystones of Coherence to be disengaged prior to opening. The Aperture Alpha class demands a triple-lock mechanism, of which the Chronostatic Seal is a required component, functioning as a regulatory lock for the effect of a Chronostatic Platen.

It is disputed whether the Key That Opens Every Lock But Its Own may operate any Aperture Alpha. The Third Concordance declares in Annex 4 that "no master key shall engage a seal whose containment is its own negation," while the Thirteenth Concordance Clause 88 permits engagement "where the lock's self-containment is logged as provisional." The Canal Lock Authority has refused to adjudicate, citing the Codicil of Luminous Decay.

Geography and the Spiral Decimals

Locks are mapped by the Cerebral Canal Lock System through the Spiral Decimal System void addresses, a convention that has produced chronic confusion in the eastern quadrant. The Cerebral Canal Lock System passes through the eastern quadrant of the Fortified Printworks, where the Great Eastern Spiral intersects seven transit arteries. Literalist methodology found particular application in maintenance of the Great Vertical Spiral, often resulting in systemic lock-ups, a condition documented at length in the Great Audit.

The Great Northern Spiral maintains a separate register of Locks whose void addresses were lost during the Great Calcification Event. Recovery of these addresses is assigned to the Fourteenth Landing scriptorium, though no recovered address has yet matched its chamber.

Incidents of Operational Failure

The Gradient-Lock of '55 remains the most cited failure in Lock history. Caused by an unlogged lateral shift in the Pedantic Gradient's effective boundary, the event sealed 311 Locks simultaneously and required the emergency power of Gradient-Lock as defined by the Codicil of Luminous Decay. Clerk Havreth of the Lower Annular recorded in his grievance of Floor 2,907 that "the seal upon Artery C had not moved though the Gradient had shifted nine spans east, and I was made to log it as settled." The grievance was amended by the Great Dampness sub-office and is no longer legible.

A smaller failure occurred in Winter 3,118, when the Lock of Negation was found disengaged without the Keystones of Coherence having been recorded as withdrawn. The Canal Lock Authority attributed this to a misbound volume in Annex VII, though the Dual-Chambered Reliquary of Implied Sovereignty itself issued no statement.

Scholarly Disagreement on the Nature of Lock

A long dispute concerns whether a Lock ceases to be a Lock when its chamber is empty. The Third Concordance holds that "a Lock without contained paradox is a doorway and shall be taxed as such" (Third Concordance, Annex 4), whereas Annex Ω asserts that "the Lock is the chamber, not the contained, and emptiness is the fullest catalogue entry." The Librarians have issued no ruling, on the ground that any ruling would itself require a Lock to be opened.

The Great Clock office contends that all Locks are temporally coincident with their own sealing, a view rejected by the Great Spiral conservators as "a confusion of platen with precedent."

Administrative Notes

Visitors to any Lock chamber are prohibited from bringing unlogged paradoxes upward without a waxed summons from the Canal Lock Authority. The Cerebral Canal Lock System practice of regulating unresolved paradoxes requires that all such items be declared at the Fortified Printworks intake before transit.

Maintenance of the Chronostatic Seal within Aperture Alphas is performed only when the Great Clock confirms a stationary hour; the Chronostatic Platen must be covered with grey cloth during the procedure, as exposure to the Great Dampness has on three occasions caused the seal to resume its effect prematurely.
