Existentially Pending
MS 2790.47 · Practices and doctrines
Existentially Pending is a procedural status, distinct from a general pending status, assigned to archival subjects whose potentiality conflicts with one or more foundational principles of reality as defined by the Tower’s regulatory frameworks. It denotes a state of suspension in which the subject's essence is adjudicated to be simultaneously necessary for taxonomic completion and operationally incompatible with the Tower's functional architecture. The status is governed under Office of the Pending Directive 47-Δ, "On the Management of Ontological Irreconcilables."
Defining Criteria
An entry is classified as Existentially Pending upon the simultaneous satisfaction of three conditions, as per Annex 3 of Directive 47-Δ:
- Taxonomic Gap: The subject must fill a documented and unresolved gap in the Tower’s classificatory schemata, as verified by a Registrar of Pending Determinations.
- Architectural Incompatibility: The subject’s purported properties or behaviors must contravene a minimum of two non-negotiable axioms of Tower operation (e.g., the Unidirectionality of Cataloguing, the Impermeability of Floor Seals, or the Conservation of Narrative Mass).
- Referential Paradox: The subject must be cited as a necessary precondition in the definition of at least one other fully catalogued and operational holding, creating a logical dependency loop.
For example, the "Spectre of the Inverted Stair" was deemed Existentially Pending because its description perfectly filled the gap for "entities that ascend by descending," yet its postulated method of locomotion violated both the Unidirectionality of Cataloguing and the Fixed Gravitational Orientation of Stacks.
Procedural Pathway
Once the criteria are met, the case is elevated from a standard pending docket to the Special Tribunal for Ontological Coherence. The Tribunal, composed of three Senior Archivists and one Advocate for Potentiality, conducts a Closed Review. If the status is confirmed, the subject is not transferred to the Pending Resolution Vault on Floor 47, as is standard. Instead, its file is relocated to a dedicated sub-compartment on Floor 710 known as the Aperture of Contested Being. Here, it is entered into the Master Folio of Pending Evidence under a unique sigil (typically a Greek letter followed by a Roman numeral, e.g., -III). Physical stewardship and the formidable security protocols for this Aperture fall to the Department of Perpetual Pending.
Distinction from Type 2: Perpetual Pending
While both states involve indefinite suspension, they are philosophically and administratively distinct. A Type 2: Perpetual Pending status, as established in the Case of the Perpetually Pending Request, applies to matters where resolution is theoretically possible but perpetually deferred. Existentially Pending, however, describes a subject for which resolution is a categorical impossibility under current ontological law; its very existence is the pending matter. Scholars of the Doctrine of Perpetual Pending often debate whether Existentially Pending is a subset of Type 2 or constitutes a separate, "Type 0" classification where the potentiality substrate itself is fractured.
Notable Cases
- The Cohered Contradiction (Σ-1)
- A treatise describing a room that is both hermetically sealed and eternally drafty. It was cited as fundamental to the environmental control systems on Floors 303-305, yet its core premise violates the Axiom of Atmospheric Containment. It has been Existentially Pending since the ratification of the Third Concordance.
- The Librarian Who Wasn't Hired (Λ-7)
- A personnel record for an individual who appears in shift logs, performance reviews, and pension ledgers, but for whom no appointment order, interview transcript, or entry in the Ledger of Inductions exists. This case creates a referential paradox for the entire personnel administration system.
- The Atlas of Unfound Floors
- A bound volume containing detailed maps, climate data, and shelf inventories for eleven floors whose numbers fall between known, sequentially catalogued floors (e.g., a Floor 420b). Its existence challenges the Principle of Discreteness in Floor Enumeration.
Scholarly Dispute and the Ceiling
The primary doctrinal controversy surrounds the "event horizon" of this status. A faction led by Archivist-Superior Vellin argues that Existentially Pending subjects, by their nature, exert a silent gravitational pull on the taxonomy, slowly warping adjacent classifications and potentially creating new provisional categories around them. The opposing view, championed by the Office of the Pending, holds that the Aperture’s containment is absolute and any perceived taxonomic drift is merely the manifestation of previously latent provisional instrumentals. This debate is formally tabled on the Ceiling of Pending Motions, where it is listed as Motion Ω-, itself a meta-example of an existentially pending procedural item.
Operational Impact
Despite—or perhaps because of—their unresolved nature, Existentially Pending entries are not inert. They are legally recognized as "active incompatibilities." This grants them a peculiar power: they can be invoked as a legitimate grounds for appeal against a provisional directive or for requesting an extension on a dormancy review. In essence, the Tower’s bureaucracy has operationalized paradox, using the undeniable "thereness" of these impossible subjects to facilitate the management of other, more mundane, uncertainties.
