Elspeth-Void

MS 4136.13 · Practices and doctrines

Elspeth-Void is a liminal condition of stone and air first recorded on the archive terraces of Harmonic Void Sigma during the seventh winter after the ratification of the Fourth Concordance. It is not a place, a material, or a person, though it has at various times been catalogued as all three. The Office of Void Cataloguing currently files it under Provisional Category 9 (Conditions, Ill-Defined), with the standing annotation that the category was created for it and no other holding has since been admitted to it.

Definition and Nomenclature

Elspeth-Void is defined in the working recension of the Office as "a void that has learned the disposition of a name." In practice, this means a region of unrecorded space which has taken on the behavioural signatures of a catalogued subject, most commonly a clerk, and thereafter resists re-survey. Where an ordinary void simply lacks a record, an Elspeth-Void is said to possess one and to keep it badly.

The name attaches to Elspeth Pallor, who is not its discoverer. Pallor had documented Iterum Coal some years earlier, and the first observers on Floor Ω-201 noted that the affected stones carried fragments of her hand in their surfaces — her slope, her hesitation, her habit of abbreviating catalogue. The resemblance was never explained and Pallor herself declined to comment. The compound form was proposed by Under-Clerk Moravec Thill in a marginalia of the survey returns and survived the ensuing dispute by the simple accident of being written first in a hand others copied.

First Recording on Floor Ω-201

The condition was noticed by masonry inspectors who found that a stretch of corridor thirty-one paces long returned no measurement twice. A sounding rod of standard length entered the wall, and emerged with a different length. The inspectors summoned the Clerks of the Balanced Void, who weighed the affected strata with Void Calipers over four sessions and obtained four different masses, none of which could be reconciled with the others or with the calibration stones.

"The void does not refuse the instrument. It declines to be the sort of thing an instrument is for. One has the distinct impression of being answered, and answered courteously, in the wrong language."

— Survey Returns, Floor Ω-201, session three, Office of Void Cataloguing

The corridor was closed to traffic by the Second Concordance, Annex 7, which forbade passage through any void exhibiting "the affectations of a colleague." It remains closed. A lamp is maintained at either end.

Relationship to Void-Fill and Void-Gall

Initial attempts at confinement followed the established practice for Void-Niche 743 and similar unclassified voids: the affected volume was to be sealed with Void-Gall and struck from the floor plan pending re-survey. The seal took. The condition migrated. Over the following eleven weeks the Elspeth-Void transferred itself by degrees into the Gall itself, and thence along the demarcation lines into the adjacent Sentinel Void, where a continuous line of Gall is required by ordinance and may not be interrupted.

This remains the only recorded instance of a void occupying its own boundary. Thereafter the Office prohibited the use of Gall in Elspeth-Void containment, and the condition is now held in place by loose Void-Chalk marks renewed each quarter, a method the Void-Wardens regard as undignified but have not formally contested.

Contradiction Between the Concordances

A dispute of long standing concerns whether an Elspeth-Void is a void at all. The Primacy of the Void holds that all space is void and that a void which behaves like a name is merely a void behaving. An influential reading of the Third Concordance, Annex 2, disagrees, holding that a void which has taken a name has left the jurisdiction of void altogether and fallen under that of persons — with the consequence that its surveys should be conducted by the Void-Scribing Quill and countersigned by a witness of the subject's house.

No witness of Pallor's house has ever presented themselves, and the Office has not established what the position would require if one did. Void-Weighing was attempted under the Third reading in the ninth year and abandoned after the balance returned a reading in paces.

The Sixth Concordance, Annex 5, appears to settle the matter by declaring that "a void which answers to a name answers to the Office," but the Sixth is contested in its entirety by the archive of Floor Δ-334 and is cited here only for completeness.

Current Standing

Elspeth-Void is entered in the Void Ledger as holding 1,149, one past the last of the designated Void-Niches, with the note provisional, recurring. Three further instances are suspected on floors Ω-208, Ω-211, and one unnumbered landing between them; the landing has been surveyed twice and given two different numbers, which the Office considers consistent with the condition and not with an error.

Chalk renewal on Floor Ω-201 is scheduled for the first week of each quarter. It takes one clerk and one afternoon. The lamps at either end of the corridor are lit.
