Eloise Contingent
MS 0268.48 · Practices and doctrines
The Eloise Contingent is a procedural doctrine of the Tower permitting the controlled dissolution of a paradox-generating holding under strict Paradox Warden oversight, codified from the personal ledgers of Registrar-General Eloise and formally defined in Concordance 117, Annex Theta-7. Its central formulation, the Eloise Equation expressed as E = C + V + (A / Ø), originates in the treatise On the Permissibility of Internal Contradiction Within a Sufficiently Documented System and is invoked through General Order Theta-7 when a catalogued impossibility threatens the integrity of an adjacent stack.
Origins and Codification
The Contingent is ascribed to Eloise of the Unspooled Chain, Senior Archivist who argued for the controlled dissolution of the Miletus Fragment and who first quantified its variables in her aforementioned treatise. The principle was tested during the Chen Discrepancy of 1908, also known as the Miletus Fragment Paradox, when a holding on Floor 4,118-Psi began generating contradictions at a rate of nine per hour. Eloise of the Unspooled Chain additionally codified the The White Noise Absorption Chain, a complementary practice later merged with the Contingent in the recensions of the Office of Granular Audit. The authorization for any invocation must be logged via Form 884-B and submitted to the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers prior to commencement, a requirement that has itself generated three documented disputes over seal validity.
Mechanism of Dissolution
Under the Contingent, a holding is not destroyed but internally unspooled: its paradox is permitted to consume itself according to the ratio set by the Eloise Equation. The Contingent Stacks were erected on Floor 2,771-Delta to receive such unspooled materials, and the Writ of Contingent Supersession governs the moment at which a dissolved holding is struck from the master catalogue. Paradox Wardens of the Contingent Epistemic Visas office oversee the process; their presence is mandated by General Order Theta-7 for the full duration of the dissolution.
"No holding shall be released from contradiction until the Aperture Sigma reading falls below four-tenths of a span, and not then if the Warden's seal is cracked."
— Concordance 117, Annex Theta-7, Clause 37
It is noted in the margin of Registrargeneral Eloise's supplementary copy that a cracked seal during the Chen Discrepancy of 1908 prolonged the dissolution by eleven days and required the temporary relocation of the Vector Gamma to a side stairwell.
Administrative Procedure and Incident
The Principle of Contingent Filing, sometimes recorded as The Principle of Contingent Filing, dictates that all dissolved holdings retain a phantom entry cross-referenced to the Contingent Stacks. In the winter of 1913, Clerk Hesper of the Narrow Quill submitted Form 884-B for the dissolution of a self-refuting index on Floor 9,002-Omicron but omitted the Warden counterseal. The Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers rejected the filing; the holding remained in place and by spring had duplicated itself across four adjacent floors. The Office of Granular Audit subsequently ruled that omission of the counterseal invalidates the entire Contingent, a position contradicted by Concordance 117, Annex Theta-7 which treats the seal as advisory after Clause 39's amendment of 1921.
Scholarly Disagreement
A standing dispute concerns whether the Contingent permits voluntary dissolution by a holding's own cataloguer or requires external petition. Eloise of the Granular Insight held in her commentary on the Eloise Equation that "the Contingent is a grant to the office, not to the hand that wrote the entry" (On the Permissibility of Internal Contradiction Within a Sufficiently Documented System, recension 4). The Contingent Epistemic Visas office disagrees, citing General Order Theta-7 which nowhere restricts petition to non-authors. The Concordance 117, Annex Theta-7 is silent on the matter, a silence the Office of Granular Audit interprets as permissive and the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers as prohibitive.
Cross-Reference and Standing
The Contingent remains in active use across forty-two floors as of the most recent spiral count. Visitors to the Contingent Stacks are reminded that no writing implement may be carried above the third landing, as inscribed on the aperture post and reaffirmed by Concordance 117, Annex Theta-7. The doctrine's interaction with the White Noise Absorption Chain is reviewed every seven years by the Paradox Warden conclave, most recently in the year of the Long Aperture.
