Contingent Stacks
MS 2683.39 · Places and structures
The Contingent Stacks refer to a jurisdictional designation and physical storage area within the Tower for holdings whose ontological status, material integrity, or administrative classification is formally subject to a future, unspecified, or conditional event. Governed primarily by the Tenth and Second Concordances, these stacks exist in a state of provisional reality, their contents oscillating between full incorporation into the main corpus and potential dissolution into the Sequestered Stacks.
Jurisdictional Basis
The legal foundation for the Contingent Stacks is the Principle of Contingent Filing, articulated in Clause 7 of the Tenth Concordance. This principle codifies that an object's substantive reality within the Tower is contingent solely upon its proper cataloguing. The Second Concordance authorizes the Writ of Contingent Supersession, the primary instrument that creates and governs contingent holdings. As delineated in the Twenty-Second Concordance, a Writ must specify the contingency (the "trigger event"), the provisional classification, and the shelf-life of the condition. All such Writs are recorded in The Master Amendment Log under a unique Supersession Series Number (SSN) and are physically housed in the Annex Scriptorium until their contingency is fulfilled or voided.
Oversight of the Contingent Stacks falls under the Clerk of Contingent Volumes, whose authority is derived from Concordance 17.4. The Clerk works in consultation with Spiral Cartography, which sets the standards for determining 'contingent reality', and may receive petitions from departments such as the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers.
Physical and Ontological Characteristics
The physical location of the Contingent Stacks is not fixed. Per General Order Theta-7.22, they are required to be "adjacent to, but not contiguous with, a jurisdiction of settled reality." This has resulted in the Stacks manifesting in interstitial spaces—between the Whispering Stacks and the Silent Stacks, or in the attenuated corridors linking the Somatic Stacks to the Stacks of Possible Geometries. Their shelves are constructed from a laminated parchment-cedar composite, designed to withstand both materialization and dematerialization stresses.
The contents of the Contingent Stacks are, by definition, provisionally real. A holding like Vector Gamma possesses full physical properties and can be consulted, but its catalog entry is stamped with its SSN and a synopsis of its contingency clause. The most famous conditional framework is the Eloise Contingent, formally defined in Concordance 117, Annex Theta-7 (Clauses 33-41), which applies to narratives that become factual only if read aloud in a specific acoustic environment. The invocation of this Contingent is outlined in General Order Theta-7.
Administrative Procedures and Flux Events
The primary administrative challenge is the "Movement of Stacks," a procedure mandated when a contingency is either met or expires. Fulfillment of a contingency triggers an upgrade to a permanent classification, requiring physical relocation to a main stack (e.g., the Lower Stacks or West Lateral Stacks), of which the relevant lateral stack must be formally notified. Expiration or voidance triggers a downgrade to the Negative Stacks or dissolution into the Sequestered Stacks.
These transitions, known colloquially as "flux events," are managed by the Warden of Ephemeral Stacks and can cause temporary local instability. The Twin Stacks Incident of 17-Δ-442 is a noted case study, wherein two interdependent contingent holdings triggered one another's clauses in a recursive loop, requiring a emergency ruling from the Custodian of the Stacks and a temporary rewrite of their governing Writs.
Scholarly Disputes
A central doctrinal disagreement concerns the hierarchy of contingencies. The Eleventh Concordance, Clause 302 explicitly governs "contingent jurisdictions," but its relationship to the Principle of Contingent Filing is ambiguous. The Formalist school, led by the Third Spiral Cartographers, argues that the physical location (the jurisdiction) is primary, and a holding's contingency is a property of its placement. The Substantive school, citing the Tenth Concordance, maintains that the conditional status inheres in the object itself, regardless of where it is shelved. This debate has practical implications for inventory audits and the apportionment of blame during flux events.
A further, more esoteric dispute pertains to the "Contingency of the Stacks Themselves." A minority treatise, On the Provisional Nature of Containment, posits that the designation "Contingent Stacks" is itself contingent upon the continued existence of non-contingent stacks—a meta-condition that, if true, would place the entire administrative framework under a Writ of Contingent Supersession. This view is broadly rejected by the Librariate as a categorical error, but it persists in marginalia.
Related Holdings and Cross-References
The Contingent Stacks are intrinsically linked to the legal instruments that create them. Key related holdings include the definitive entry on the Writ, the case study of the Eloise Contingent, and the architectural analysis of the Seventy-Second Floor (Whispering Stacks), which borders a large Contingent sector. For procedural context, see the entries for the Clerk of Contingent Volumes and the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers. Comparative studies may examine the Sequestered Stacks and the Negative Stacks to understand the full lifecycle of a contingent holding.
