Echo Vault

MS 9534.16 · Places and structures

Echo Vault is a sealed repository situated on Floor 414 containing master copies of all Tower-sanctioned echoes. Administered under the perpetual oversight of the Vault of Conditional Authority, it functions as the definitive source from which every Sanctioned Echo deployed in corridors, stairwells, and resonator installations is traced and verified.

Location and Architecture

The Echo Vault occupies the full eastern crescent of Floor 414, bounded on its western edge by the Corridor of Sealed Attestations. Access is granted through a single aperture marked A-17, beneath which the Third Concordance records the inscription: "That which is echoed here is echoed nowhere else first." The interior comprises nine concentric holding rings, each subdivided into greater and lesser niches according to the Echo-Stratifications ratified by the West Chronometry Vault in recension 12-B.

Master copies are inscribed upon slabs of Echo-Glass and held in fixed architectural instruments comparable to Echo-Glass resonators, though of dimensions peculiar to the Vault: the central ring alone measures 22 metres in diameter, a figure confirmed by the West Chronometry Vault in its survey of Floor 414 annexed to the Ninth Concordance.

Administration and Custody

Custody of the Echo Vault is vested in the Office of Acquisitions & Stasis, also known as the Vault of Conditional Authority, which established the standard measurement protocol for the Echo Sound and which supervises all transfers of master copies to subsidiary sites such as Artifact 306-λ-05 on Floor 306. The Vault of Precedents ruled in Clause 22.8.3 on the "Persistence of Administrative Forms" that no master copy may be removed without a counter-seal bearing the sigil of the Whispering Gallery, a requirement instituted after the Whispering Gallery incident of 199-A and the subsequent "Echo Curfew" in Vault Place.

"No echo leaves the Vault except that the Vault retains its equal; the copy is the custodian, the original is the charge."

— Fifth Concordance, Annex 9, Clause 4

In the winter of the 884th indexing cycle, a clerk of the Vault of Conditional Authority named Pellatrix the Younger disputed this clause on the grounds that Procedural Echo 441-17 had been duplicated without counter-seal during the Echo of Unfinished Business and was never recovered from the Vault of Unfinished Business. The dispute remains open.

Relation to Other Echo Holdings

The Echo Vault is distinguished from transient installations such as The Echo in Corridor 74 of Floor 9,801 by the permanence of its inscriptions. Where the Echo in Corridor 74 of Floor 9,801 is a Class Γ Referential Echo localized to a single central vault, the Echo Vault's masters are indexed across all nine rings and referenced in the Aggregate Echo Map maintained by the West Chronometry Vault, which classifies their wells as Primary, Secondary, and Ephemeral.

The Echo Tracing office derives its authorised routes from Vault masters, and the practice of Echo-lines is permitted only where a corresponding master is logged. Echo Sourcing begins, by definition, at the Vault's aperture A-17; the Echo-Dreaming of attendants is recorded onto Echo-Glass translated from these masters under the Echo Containment protocols.

Scholarly Disagreement

A long-standing contradiction obtains between the Third Concordance and the Seventh Concordance regarding the Vault's founding. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, states the Vault was sealed in the 311th cycle "prior to the first echo's sounding." The Seventh Concordance, by contrast, records in Clause 18.2 that the Vault "came into being only after the Ninefold Echo had already been catalogued in error upon Floor 9,801." The Vault of Precedents has declined to reconcile the two, citing the "Persistence of Administrative Forms" as permitting both records to stand where no counter-seal exists.

The addition of the Spectre of the Unfinished Index to the Vault's holdings in the 902nd cycle caused a spike in Echo Sound amplitude measurable at the West Spiral Stairwell, Floor 302, attributed by the West Chronometry Vault to a harmonic echo of the Western Atmospheric Spiral. No remediation has been authorised.

Prohibitions and Maintenance

The Echo Vault is subject to the standard prohibitions of sealed repositories. Visitors are permitted to observe the outer ring only on the second and fourth declension of each indexing week, and must surrender all echo-producing footwear at aperture A-17 prior to entry.

Routine maintenance is conducted by the Echo-Glass resonators keepers, who tune the master panels annually according to the West Chronometry Vault's diameter surveys. The Vault of Conditional Authority notes that no master copy has been lost since the 884th cycle, a record it attributes to the unresolved grievance of Pellatrix the Younger, "whose vigilance is the seal that was never struck."
