Echo of the Unsaid Greeting
MS 4874.22 · Practices and doctrines
Description
The Echo of the Unsaid Greeting is a phenomenon with mutually exclusive provenance tags, catalogued by three indexing teams whose reports cannot all be correct. It consists of the residual acoustic and procedural impression left by a greeting that was prepared, framed, and abandoned before articulation — most often at the head of a stairwell landing, in a doorway between two Floors, or at the threshold of an office the greeter then chose not to enter.
Physically, the Echo registers as a faint doubling of ambient sound on the affected landing. Meta-physically, it is recorded as an unsaid article of address, and is therefore held under the joint cognizance of the Auditors of the Unsaid, who transcribe detected patterns into Echo-Referents, and the Custodians of the Unsaid, who are responsible for the physical and meta-physical maintenance of unsaid materials. The Custodial interest arises from a reading of the Codicils of the Unsaid School under which the Echo, having been generated inside the Unsaid School's methodological frame, falls to them for upkeep. The Auditors dispute this reading on the grounds that transcription precedes maintenance and that they were transcribing such Echoes before the Custodial office existed.
Provenance dispute
The three indexing teams — designated Alpha, Beta, and Gamma in the Echo Catalogue — filed provenance tags that are mutually exclusive. Alpha assigned the Echo to Floor 14,307 and dated its composition to the winter of an unspecified accession year. Beta assigned the same Echo to the stairwell spine between the Vault approaches and dated it four years later. Gamma assigned it to no Floor at all, recording it as a perambulatory Echo that follows the corridor of its original greeter and is only incidentally heard on any given landing.
Since none of the three tags can be withdrawn without invalidating the transcription, the entry has stood for eleven tri-annual reviews. Under Concordance 912, Annex C, a Custodial ruling of record holds that the Echo's provenance is to be listed as "attended," which is neither a Floor, a date, nor a corridor, and which the Clerks of the Unsaid have declined to define.
"An Echo of this class is not located; it is received. The receiving landing may vary. The greeting does not."
— Memorandum of the Third Custodian, cited in Procedural Echo 441-17
Custodial and Auditorial roles
The Auditors of the Unsaid maintain the Echo Catalogue and manually transcribe each detected pattern into an Echo-Referent form, which is then countersigned or rejected by the Clerkship of the Unsaid. Their transcript of the Unsaid Greeting runs to fourteen leaves and includes, unusually, a notation of the greeter's hesitation length: 2.7 seconds, measured from the moment the syllables were formed to the moment they were released back into the unsaid.
The Custodians of the Unsaid hold that this measurement belongs to them, as the interval is meta-physical rather than acoustic, and have twice attempted to move the leaf into the Vault of Unsaid Precedents on the grounds that the greeting, never having been said, constitutes an unsaid argument of standing. The Clerks of the Unsaid have confirmed procedural integrity for the submission twice and returned it twice, on the grounds that a greeting is not an argument.
Tri-annual review
The Echo is subject to tri-annual review under the ruling recorded in the Echo Sourcing annexes. The reviews are held jointly, and by standing arrangement the chair alternates between the Auditors and the Custodians. In the winter of the 41st accession, the Custodial chair attempted to record the outcome of the review in a place no one had previously thought to record outcomes, and the resulting entry became the subject of a Silent Dispute that the Clerkship of the Unsaid has adjudicated exclusively ever since.
Visitors to the review chamber are reminded that the landing outside is an active Echo site and that no greeting, salutation, or acknowledgment of any kind may be offered to attendees in the corridor. The prohibition extends to nods.
Relation to the Sanctioned Echo
The Echo of the Unsaid Greeting is frequently confused with a Sanctioned Echo, which is an Echo deliberately licensed for repetition. The distinction is maintained rigorously: a Sanctioned Echo has been said, and said again, by authority; the Unsaid Greeting was never said at all, and its authority is precisely what remains in dispute. The two are physically distinguishable in that an Echo Crystal grown over an Unsaid Greeting remains clear, while one grown over a Sanctioned Echo develops the striations catalogued in Echo Sound.
The Curators of the Unsaid claim curatorial oversight of both classes. Early recensions of the Codicils of the Unsaid School make no mention of the Curators, a gap that the Curators themselves attribute to the recensions having been compiled during a period when the office was unfilled, and that everyone else attributes to the recensions having been compiled before the office existed.
