Dynamic Status Flux

Definition
Dynamic Status Flux is a proposed classification denoting a condition in which a catalogued subject holds more than one administrative status simultaneously, and holds them in a measurable, repeating alternation rather than a settled hierarchy. It is the subject of Clause 19 of the Seventh Concordance, which states that such a condition is "a categorical error," and of the Provisional Ontology annexed to that clause, which states that it is not. The dispute has been open for the duration of the present recension. The term is not a species of flux. This is the point most often misunderstood. Where Topological Flux and Anachronistic Flux describe a state of a subject's location or origin, Dynamic Status Flux describes a state of a subject's record — specifically, a record in which the entries for status mutually exclude one another and yet are both current. The Bureau of Vital Flux Measurement has argued repeatedly that this makes it not a flux at all but a clerical condition, and that it belongs to the Provisional Ontology rather than to any register of measured phenomena. The Bureau's position is that a quantifiable substrate is a precondition for flux of any kind, and that a record is not a substrate.Origins of the designation
The designation appears first in the marginalia of the Manual of Hydrographic Protocol, where a clerk identified only as H. Merrow annotated a failing ledger on floor 1134 during the winter of the long damp. Merrow's note reads, in full: "Status alternates; not undecided." The annotation was promoted to a designation three years later by the scriptorium of the same floor, without reference to any higher authority, which remains the usual manner in which such things occur. The Progressive Indexing Guild contested the promotion on the grounds that Dynamic Status Flux was already covered by their Manifesto for Perpetual Flux as a subtype of Dynamic Locus behaviour, and that a second designation would fracture their proposed methodology for Dynamic Recursion. The Guild's objection was sustained by the Third Concordance and then quietly reversed by an annex to the Seventh Concordance that does not mention the Guild at all.The Kalendor incident
The best-documented instance of Dynamic Status Flux concerns the Kalendor Flux and the conflicting positions taken by the Bureau of Flux and Refluence and the Custodians of Fluids Amp Flux. The Bureau calculated that a Vital Flux Measurement taken at the locus would accelerate the recursive cascade; the Custodians applied initial dampening protocols on the same floor at approximately the same hour. Both offices filed records of their action. Both records are current. For eleven days the Kalendor locus was simultaneously listed as "under dampening" and "under measurement." Interrogation of the locus itself was unhelpful. The status was not oscillating in any sense a visitor could perceive; it was simply that neither office would withdraw its entry, and no provision existed for two entries to be superseded by each other. The matter was referred to the Librarians, who issued no finding but noted the file for cross-reference. It remains noted.Relation to absence
The Bureau of Vital Flux Measurement contends that Dynamic Status Flux is a specialized form of Topological Flux and therefore falls within its mandate for quantification — a position that would, if sustained, bring the designation under Ordinance of Vital Circulation and out of the Provisional Ontology entirely. The Bureau of Flux and Refluence opposes this, arguing that Topological Flux and Anachronistic Flux are phenomena from which evidence for Absence Flux can be inferred, and that nothing can be inferred from a record that contradicts itself. This is the substantive disagreement. It turns on whether a record is evidence of a state or merely evidence of a record. The Treatise on Dynamic Resonance holds, in its discussion of pressure gradients, that "the state of a phenomenon exists on a gradient of measurable pressure or flux" — but does not say whether a document describing a state shares that gradient. The omission has been the subject of at least four commentaries, none of which agrees with the others.Administrative treatment
Until the present recension, subjects exhibiting Dynamic Status Flux were handled by provisional listing under the Provisional Ontology, with a Flux Annex appended at intervals determined by the frequency of the alternation. In practice this meant that a locus listed twice would receive two annexes, and the two annexes would themselves require reconciliation, generating a third. The Perpetual Calibrated Chain procedure was introduced to arrest this recursion: a single annex is appended, and all subsequent changes are recorded as deltas against it rather than as new entries. The procedure is efficient and has been adopted on floors where the alternation is short-period. It has not been adopted where the alternation exceeds one recension, because no one has determined what a delta would be a delta against. Visitors to affected floors should note that the reading rooms concerned are open on alternate mornings only, on the grounds that the room itself is listed as both open and closed. The rule is enforced by the attendants and has never been explained in writing.See also
