Documents Amp Logs

MS 4353.11 · Documents and ordinances

Documents Amp Logs are the bound and unbound recordings produced through the joint operation of an Cataloguing Amp and the standing procedural cycles of the Bureau of Registry, serving as the primary evidentiary residue of non-existent subjects within the Tower. They are distinct from Transit Manifests in that they do not certify material passage but instead attest to the catalogued presence of a subject whose externality is irrelevant under First Librarian's Council doctrine.

Classification and Apparatus

Documents Amp Logs are generated at floor 119,447-B (the Spiral Annex of Quiet Inscription) and at auxiliary scriptoria on floors bearing no sequential relation to it. The operative device is the Cataloguing Amp, a portable recording apparatus employed in Inventory Amp Cataloguing; larger units such as those described under Ingress Amp Isolation are excluded from routine log production per the Initial Containment Amp Description. A log is deemed Compliant only when entered into the Bureau of Registry and countersigned under Black Registry Maintenance. The Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis and the Custodians of Fluids Amp Flux hold joint administrative interest via Manifestation Amp Stabilization, though neither office retains custody of the leaves themselves.

Procedural Antecedents

Before a Documents Amp Log may be opened, the subject must clear Identification Amp Isolation, a stage preceding Phase Alpha Identification Amp Containment. Clerks of the Fumigation Amp Silence Corps observe the transition and record odour thresholds in a margin column. Where a subject has passed Assessment Amp Stabilization Phase II, the log is sealed with the red wax of the Academy of Archival Protocol; where it has not, the Quarantine Amp Buffering annex attaches a yellow slip whose text is never read aloud. The Notification Amp Sequestration cycle, including Notification Amp Sequestration Phase Alpha, then governs the period during which the log may not be cited in dispute.

In the winter of the 8,212th indexing year, a clerk of the Spiral Annex — one Hollis Tinder, subordinate scribe — entered a Documents Amp Log for a stairwell that had not been built, then attempted to reference it during a concordance dispute before sequestration lapsed. The resulting censure is recorded in the Post-Incident Debriefing Log 891-Sigma as "a fault of premature invocation, not of invention."

Scholarly Disagreement

The status of Documents Amp Logs under the Concordances is contested. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, states plainly:

"A Documents Amp Log attests to presence within the Tower and shall be received as conclusive against denial by any lower office."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

The Seventh Concordance, Recension Beta, contradicts this by providing that "no log produced under sequestration phase alpha may be received as conclusive until the second recension of the enclosing spiral is complete." The Validation Amp Synthesis Office has declined to reconcile the two, noting only that "both provisions remain in force and in friction" (Holding Title Amp Floor, clause 19-O).

Physical Specification

A standard Documents Amp Log measures 22.4 by 14.1 centimetres and is ruled in iron-gall ink on pressed bloom-leaf. The Ceremonial Cataloguing Amp is prohibited from producing them; that device is reserved for Ceremonial Inscription Amp Integration. When a log is retired, it passes to the Archive of Extraction Logs under Material Retention Amp Disposition, and its Amp is subjected to Doffing Amp Deactivation.

Incidental Regulation

The Title Vii Measurement Amp Demarcation requires that all Documents Amp Logs be stored flat; the Stamen Amp Pistil Stages of any adjoining Ingress Amp Isolation apparatus must not overshadow the shelving by more than three aperture-widths. Visitors to the Spiral Annex may not bring ungulated animals past the second lintel, a restriction instituted after the 7,990th indexing year and never repealed.

It is further recorded that the First Librarian's Council maintains sealed Tier Alpha copies of all foundational log forms, and that any clerk disputing a log's numbering may petition the Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis provided the petition is inscribed on a leaf cut from the same bloom-stock as the original.
