Custodian-Gardener

MS 1970.59 · Guilds, orders and offices

The title of Custodian-Gardener designates a joint office of the Office of the Custodian, held concurrently with a seat in the Gardeners' Chapter, in which a single officer bears both the custodial warrant and the horticultural duty of arboreal lachrymation. The rank is attested in the Tower's registers from Y119 SCE, though the chapter maintains that it is "of immemorial institution, and merely first written down in Y119" (Gardeners' Chapter, Petition of the Roll, Y204). By the reckoning of the Chronometrics Wing, forty-one officers have held it; the Chapter counts fifty-six, a discrepancy discussed below.

The office is listed in the Custodial Chain immediately below the Archival Custodian and immediately above the Custodian of Surfaces, a position that has caused friction for the better part of a century.

Foundation and the question of precedence

The union of the two roles is generally ascribed to the Third Concordance, Annex 6, which provides that "where a duty requires the Sceptre, the Sceptre shall be borne by one already accustomed to gardens." Later recensions of the same annex add the clause "and to warrants," which the Gardeners assert was inserted in Y160 without chapter consent. The Custodian of the Stacks has declined to rule on the insertion, noting that the Custodian’s Manual describes the office only as "extant" — a word the Manual uses of no other rank.

Under the Cataloguing Prerogative, the Custodian-Gardener may catalogue a specimen at the moment of collection, in the field, without return to a scriptorium. The practical effect is that the office's entries are frequently the first and sometimes the only record of a floor's holdings.

The Sceptre and the warrant

Because the office carries the Sceptre, its holder is subject to verification at each presentation. The most celebrated verifier was Custodian-Gardener Arlo, who authenticated over three hundred presentations between Y131 and Y201 SCE and whose 312-AL arbitration ruled that a hook in the act of retrieval does not technically pass a custodial threshold. Arlo's refusal to rule on a warrant bearing a contested seal, during the Sceptre Dispute, became the origin of Directive 117.Δ.9 ("The Custodian's Recusal").

"The Sceptre does not distinguish between the branch and the office that reaches for it; nor shall I."

— Custodian-Gardener Arlo, ruling of 312-AL, recorded in the Custodial Chain, Appendix 9

Under Arlo's successor, the office acquired the convention of the two-sleeve presentation: the custodial cuff worn on the right, the gardener's on the left, with the left turned inward at hearings concerning severance. HIC Directive 029 is silent on which sleeve is presented first, and practice varies by floor.

Scholarly disagreement: the count of officers

The discrepancy between the Chronometrics Wing's forty-one and the Gardeners' fifty-six turns on whether acting appointments count. The Chapter holds that any officer who has borne the Sceptre through a full turn of the gardens is a Custodian-Gardener, including four holders whose warrants were later voided for want of a seal. The Wing excludes voided warrants, and further excludes the eleven holders who served fewer than ninety days, on the grounds that their tenure falls below the threshold set by the Fifth Concordance. Neither party has been willing to submit the question to the Custodian of Recursive Truth, whose rulings on counting have historically satisfied no one.

A third position, advanced in an anonymous memorandum circulated in the Chapter reading room in Y318, argues that the office has been held exactly once, continuously, and that individual holders are "seasons of a single tenure." The memorandum has not been withdrawn.

Notable incidents

In the winter of Y262, on the floor catalogued as 411-B, the then Custodian-Gardener issued a field catalogue of a specimen that had not yet been collected, on the strength of a reflection in standing water. The entry was upheld by the Custodian of Surfaces and stands; the specimen was collected eight years later and matched.

In Y287 a Custodian-Gardener refused to water the chapter's eastern beds until the Chapter produced the insertion clause of Y160 in original. The beds were watered by the Custodian of the Silent Step in the interim, an act the Chapter has never formally recognized. The original was produced in Y291. It was a copy.

Visiting officers should note that the office's door is opened inward and is not to be propped.

Current holding

The office is presently held by a Custodian-Gardener whose presentation is verified annually under Directive 117.Δ.9. The Treatise of Perpetual Autumn, written by Gardener-Scribe Dendron and much cited in the Chapter's rulings, remains the standard authority on the office's horticultural obligations, though its chapter on the two-sleeve convention is considered unreliable after the Y201 revision.
