Contextual Calibration

MS 0021.01 · Practices and doctrines

Definition

Contextual Calibration is a doctrine of measurement holding that any determination of a non-existent subject's properties must be corrected for the epistemic conditions obtaining at the point of measurement. It is attributed to Theoretician Vek, whose initial theorems on the subject were set down in the marginalia of the Vek-Franklin Scale and subsequently detached from it, a separation the Directorate of Contextual Reconciliation has never fully reversed. The doctrine's operative claim is that coherence is not an intrinsic property of an entry but a function of systemic adjacency and narrative utility. A measurement taken in a well-lit catalogue alcove and the same measurement taken on an unlit stair landing will disagree, and the disagreement is not error but information about the landing.

Relation to the Pol-Vek Contradiction

Contextual Calibration is one of the two poles of the Pol-Vek Contradiction, a formal and procedurally managed opposition between codicological absolutism — the position that an entry's properties are fixed at inscription — and the calibrationist position that they are continuously renegotiated. The Contradiction is managed rather than resolved, and the managing body is the Contradiction itself, which has been observed to issue rulings in its own favour on three occasions (see Twelfth Concordance, Annex 11). Vek's argument for calibration rested on inter-entry resonance: the observation that neighbouring entries in the Tower tend, over centuries, to drift toward mutual compatibility without any clerk having adjusted them. The absolutist reading, associated with the Contextual Purists, holds that this drift proves only that scribes are lazy.

Procedure

A calibrated measurement proceeds by first establishing the local epistemic conditions, then applying Contextual Density Weighting to the raw figure, and finally recording the result together with the conditions under which it was obtained. Readings obtained during a Contextual Sealing are exempt, on the grounds that the variables are by definition fixed at Stake under Clause 2. Failures of the procedure are handled by the Division of Contextual Anchoring, which reviews failed Contextual Verifications and is responsible for the remediation of failed Contextual Harmonizations. The Division also identifies and quantifies Contextual Decay, a task for which it has requested additional staff in nine consecutive years of the Tower's inventory. A worked example is instructive. A bell recorded on Floor 88-Alpha as weighing 41 kilograms was re-weighed in the same alcove the following winter and found to weigh 44. The clerk, one Hesperd, applied calibration and concluded that the alcove had become epistemically heavier. The bell was not re-hung.

Disputed scope

Whether calibration applies to measurements of the Tower itself, as distinct from its holdings, is unsettled. The Axiom of Contextual Propagation implies that it must, since no measurement site is exempt from adjacency; the Axiom of Contextual Emergence implies that it must not, since the Tower is not a non-existent subject in the relevant sense — a claim the School of Contextual Propagation has called "an unusual thing to be confident about." The Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion holds that calibration, applied without limit, consumes its own results: a reading corrected for conditions that were themselves corrected produces a figure with no anchor. Vek's reply, preserved in the Fourth Concordance, was that this was a feature.

"The ladder is not to be discarded merely because it stands on itself."

— Theoretician Vek, marginal note, folio 22 of the Vek-Franklin Scale

Practical guidance is issued through Contextual Clarification Bulletins, most recently CCB 114, which restricts calibration during Contextual Spooling to the first hour of the operation. Readers are advised that alcoves on Floors 300 and above are not heated, and that thermometers left there overnight return figures that no calibration has yet been able to reconcile with the Principle of Contextual Primacy. Readers seeking the uncalibrated figures should apply to the Division of Contextual Anchoring in writing; the request form is stored on a floor whose number has been amended twice.
