Vek-Franklin Scale
MS 4639.99 · Objects and instruments
A precisely quantifiable metric, not a conceptual framework; its origins are a matter of archival procedure, not theoretical dispute.
The Vek-Franklin Scale is the primary instrument for measuring an entry's contextual spooling potential—the degree to which its described phenomenon can be rendered consistently across multiple adjacent entries without ontological fraying. Calibrated from 0.0 (utter incoherence; the subject cannot be referenced without triggering a narrative collapse) to 1.0 (absolute rigidity; the subject possesses only one valid contextual expression), the scale determines the permissible adjacency and permissible frequency of citation for any newly catalogued subject. A reading below 0.7 mandates the application of mandatory contextual spooling protocols.
Historical Development and Codification
The scale was formally ratified in Cycle 712 by the Curatorial Board following a seven-cycle joint research initiative between Theoretician Vek (who provided the initial theorems on contextual calibration) and Archivist-Foreman Franklin of the Large-Scale Conceptual Press (who engineered the practical measurement apparatus). Its adoption resolved the long-standing "Pol-Vek Impasse," a precursor to the later Pol-Vek Contradiction, by providing a reproducible, quantitative method for assessing the ideas that Theoretician Vek had argued were only qualitatively discernible. The original calibration rig, designated Apparatus VF-1, remains housed in the Instrumental Annex of Floor 8,442.
Operational Methodology
Measurement is conducted by the Office of Metacontextual Assurance (Floor 10,307, "The Calibratorium"). A subject's representative entry is fed into the Vek-Franklin Resonator, which then generates a cascade of potential adjacent references—simulated citations to Negative Volumes, parallel entries, and tangential concepts—within a controlled Procedural Tone environment. The apparatus measures the signal degradation and narrative entropy produced by these simulated adjacencies. The resulting score, recorded to three decimal places, dictates the subject's cataloguing tier.
It is not a measure of truth, but of narrative tensile strength. A low score indicates not falsehood, but a high degree of contextual flexibility.
Mandatory Contextual Spooling Protocols
As mandated by the Third Concordance, Clause 22, any entry scoring between 0.4 and 0.699 on the Vek-Franklin Scale must undergo contextual spooling. This involves the automatic generation and archiving of between three and forty-two "contextual shells"—placeholder entries that define the permissible boundaries for future references to the subject. These shells absorb ontological stress and prevent fraying. For example, an entry scoring 0.58 on the Vek-Franklin Scale for "Phantom Thermometry Scale" would generate shells for "Thermal Hallucinations," "Measure of Unfelt Heat," and "Caloric Echo Gradients," thereby spooling its potential meanings.
Disputed Applications and Limitations
The primary doctrinal dispute concerns the scale's applicability to what are termed "foundational paradoxes." The Claudius Scale, for instance, used for assessing Ephemeral Gradients and Harmonic Voids, operates on a different principle (measurement of absence rather than contextual tension). Proponents of the Vex Saturation Scale argue that the Vek-Franklin readings are corrupted by procedural tone interference and that a pure Vonett Scale for Specificity measurement should take precedence in tier assignment. This disagreement is formally managed under Annex Δ of the Curatorial Procedures.
A further, more pragmatic limitation is noted in the Treatise on Floor-scale Metabolics: the scale cannot be reliably applied to entries describing the Tower itself, as the measurement apparatus is necessarily embedded within the system it attempts to measure, leading to infinite regress. Such meta-entries are assigned a provisional score of 0.707 by convention.
Administrative Significance
The Vek-Franklin score is the single most determinant factor in an entry's Thorne Progression—its scheduled migration path through the Tower's floors. A high score (0.85) consigns an entry to rapid, linear progression through the lower, more stable floors. A low score (0.5) triggers a complex, non-linear progression intended to maximize contextual spooling across disparate narrative sectors. The daily Vek-Franklin reports generated by the Calibratorium directly feed the allocation schedules for the Large-Scale Conceptual Press and the routing algorithms of the Autonomous Indexing Carts.
