Conduit-Tenders

MS 7449.50 · Guilds, orders and offices

Conduit-Tenders are certified personnel authorized to perform non-technical, direct-contact maintenance and monitoring duties on designated conduit specifications under the operational oversight of the Guild of Conduit Tenders. The role is distinct from that of a Conduit Technician, whose work involves internal componentry and pressure regulation.

Scope of Authority

Under the provisions of Annex 4 of the Third Concordance, a Conduit-Tender's mandate is limited to the exterior surfaces, access hatches, and immediate environmental zone (defined as a 1.5-meter perimeter) of a registered conduit. Primary duties, as codified in the Guild’s Operational Ledger, include:

  • Visual inspection for surface crystallization, particularly of Whispering Silica.
  • Acoustic monitoring using a Theta Caliper to gauge compliance with established hum profiles.
  • Manual operation of external bleed valves during prescribed flush cycles.
  • Submitting Form 7-B (Condition Report) to the local Guild of Factotums office within 24 hours of any anomaly.

Conduit-Tenders are expressly prohibited from making adjustments to internal pressure seals, interpreting spectral analysis from aural feeds, or authorizing traffic in the Pneumatic Conduit Array.

Certification and Guild Affiliation

Certification is granted by the Guild of Conduit Tenders following a six-month apprenticeship and successful examination on the Manual of Surface Protocols. While the Guild provides certification, Conduit-Tenders are typically employed directly by the custodial bodies of specific floors or spires. For example, Spire-Tenders on several mid-level agricultural floors retain a staff of Conduit-Tenders to monitor the Indirect Ventilation Conduits that feed their atmospheres.

A point of ongoing bureaucratic dispute is whether Conduit-Tenders assigned to Aural Conduit Theta-14, which carries administrative dictation, fall under the same Class-3 mandate as those monitoring the Hum of the Lower Floors. The Office of Conduit Verification has yet to issue a clarifying addendum.

Distinction from Spire-Tenders

While both roles involve custodial duties, a Spire-Tender holds a broader portfolio of logistical coordination and spatial stewardship for an entire spire structure. A Conduit-Tender’s responsibility is conduit-specific. In practice, a Spire-Tender may supervise several Conduit-Tenders, and protocols from both the Guild of Conduit Tenders and the Guild of Spore-Tenders may apply in areas of overlapping atmospheric concern.

Notable Assignments

Conduit-Tenders are deployed across the Tower’s known infrastructure. Notable postings include:

  • The perpetual monitoring of the Waste Conduit’s primary outflow junctions on Floor 447 (The Sediment Level), where tenders are issued reinforced olfactory dampeners.
  • The weekly “listening shift” along the Conduit of Sighs, a duty rotated among senior tenders following the Guild’s verification that it does not connect to active transport lines.
  • The bi-annual surface-polishing of Conduit Alpha’s ceremonial intake manifold, a task performed with a specific grade of pumice recorded in Concordance Supplement 12-b.

Disputes and Ambiguities

The most persistent scholarly disagreement regarding Conduit-Tenders revolves around the Breathing Corridor on Floor 309. While the Guild of Conduit Tenders asserts its Class-3 Atmospheric and Conveyance Mandate applies, the Stairwell Stewardship chapter of the Second Concordance claims the corridor is a “ventilated stairwell annex” and thus outside the Guild’s purview. Consequently, Conduit-Tenders assigned to the corridor must file duplicate reports to two separate oversight bodies, a practice that continues pending a resolution from the Librarians that is not anticipated.
