Clerk of the Threshold
MS 3534.31 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Clerk of the Threshold is the head of the eponymous Office of the Clerk of the Threshold within Registry A-12 of the broader Office of the Clerk Registrar. The position is responsible for the adjudication of all spatial and jurisdictional ambiguities occurring at or within one pace of any defined doorway, archway, or similar aperture in the Tower, as well as the authentication of phenomena related to transitional states.
Mandate and Jurisdiction
According to Concordance 77, Annex δ, the Clerk's primary duty is "to render liminal spaces legible to the archive." This encompasses a wide range of protocols, from the standard measurement of doorframes (per the Vance Threshold) to the evaluation of contested Departure Slip (DS-7 series) filings for evidence of spontaneous egress. The Clerk's authority is considered absolute within their defined sphere, though it is frequently challenged by the Clerk of Ambulation regarding moving staircases and by the Department of Ephemera concerning shadows cast across thresholds.
The procedural manual On Perpetual Occupancy notes that access to certain secured holdings requires simultaneous authorization from both the Clerk of the Threshold and the Clerk Registrar, a clause that has been the source of considerable administrative deadlock.
Historical Functions and the Practice of Threshold Grace
The Office's most notable function for several centuries was the authentication of instances of Threshold Grace. This required the Clerk, or a designated deputy, to personally witness and certify a subject's passage through a doorway without technically traversing it. The certification process involved the completion of Form 88-C in triplicate and its reconciliation against reported spiritual taxonomies. The last officially authenticated case was recorded in Year 1122 of the Current Archive. The role of the Clerk shifted thereafter toward more bureaucratic oversight of threshold-related disputes, as the practice itself became extinct.
Notable Officeholders
The most extensively documented Clerk is Clerk Aris, who held the position from Year 1101 to 1155 and authored the seminal Treatise on Implied Vestibules. Aris's tenure is often cited as the peak of the Office's influence, prior to its gradual absorption into the Registrar's broader administrative machinery. His interpretations of the Vance Threshold, particularly regarding revolving doors, remain the standard for all subsequent audit protocols. Earlier records are fragmentary, though Prefect Aris Thorn is noted in marginalia as having performed similar duties for the Upper Reaches prior to the formalization of the Office.
Contemporary Status and Apparatus
Following the dissolution of the Threshold Grace authentication protocols, the position's duties have been largely codified into a series of declarative parsers housed in sub-basement A-77b. The current Clerk, whose identity is not publicly listed in accordance with Concordance 12-beta, is understood to function primarily as a systems overseer and an arbiter for appeals that the parsers cannot resolve. These often involve complex temporal loops or spatially recursive doorways, particularly those adjacent to Photophobic Holdings.
The physical apparatus of the Office includes the Threshold Gauge (a calibrated brass instrument for measuring aperture intent), filing cabinets containing all authenticated Form 88-Cs, and the sealed Archive of Uncrossed Silhouettes.
Scholarly Disputes
A significant point of contention among procedural historians is whether the Clerk of the Threshold and the Keeper of the Threshold are, or ever were, separate offices. Concordance 44 refers to them interchangeably, while Concordance 91 describes the Keeper as a "ceremonial vestige" with no administrative power. The Office of Voluntary Correspondence maintains that any distinction is purely academic, as all relevant inquiries are now handled by their automated routing systems. Nevertheless, certain traditionalist factions within the Librarian Corps insist on using the older title in all Declarative Parsers, leading to periodic reconciliation errors in the log files.
