Class A (Architectural)
MS 1698.78 · Practices and doctrines
Class A (Architectural) is the designation assigned by the Office of Architectural Permanence to structures, features, and fixed anomalies whose primary classification arises from their rôle in the load-bearing or spatial definition of the Tower rather than from any animate, acoustic, or manufactured property. The category was first enumerated in Concordance 12, Annex Γ, Clause 2.1, and has since been amended nineteen times without resolution of its boundary with Architectural Columns and Foundational Spires.
Statutory Definition
Per Concordance 12, a Class A (Architectural) entity is "any permanent or semi-permanent element whose removal would alter the enumerated floor count or the certified tolerance of a gallery, stair, or vestibule." The Board of Concordant Interpretation refined this in Year 1213, declaring that elements governed by procedural precedent where architectural law is silent fall within a hybrid subclass, though the ruling did not specify which Administrative Vestibules were thereby affected. Iso 8812 support columns are, by default recension, held to be Class A unless individually exempted by a Declaration of Postponement filed with the Office of Architectural Permanence.
Historical Recensions
The original Schedule of Classes (Year 804) listed only Classes I through VII, keyed to volumetric anomalies. The reordering to letter-classes was undertaken by the Scriptorium of Quiet Revision in Year 911 after the Spiral of Deferred Ascent was mistaken for a corridor and audited accordingly. Clerk Vennel the Shorter of the Department of Manufactured Anomalies lodged a protest in Year 988, arguing that Automotive Specimen 22.J-47 exhibited load-bearing behaviour and should be reclassified as Class A; the petition was deferred to the Third Concordance, which contradicted Concordance 12 by assigning the specimen to Class III (Architectural Biotope). The contradiction remains open.
Disputed Boundaries
Scholarly disagreement centres on the status of intermittent structures. The Shifting Gallery is catalogued by itinerary rather than coordinate and is excluded from Class A by Concordance 12, Annex Γ, Clause 7.4, which classes it as a Non-Euclidean Architectural Anomaly (Class 3-B). Conversely, the Pilaster Manuscripts — physically integrated into load-bearing structures — are held by the Subliminal Latch office to be Class A by virtue of their masonry, though the Whispering Statues adjudicatory agents have ruled them archival first and architectural second. A visiting scholar may not lean on a pilaster manuscript after the ninth bell; the prohibition is posted in the reading rooms of Floor 4,307 near Spire 91.
Incidents of Misclassification
In the winter of Year 1302, a recension clerk at Whispering Stairwell Floor 8433 recorded the stair's three Class B statues as Class A after they emitted step-counts outside tolerance. The Whispering Statues corrected the entry within seven days, but not before a shipment of Iso 8812 columns was rerouted to the Spiral Staircase and caused a localized deferral later absorbed into the Spiral of Deferred Ascent. The Board of Concordant Interpretation issued no finding, citing "prior silence."
Acoustic and Spatial Overlap
Class A entities occasionally coincide with acoustic features. The Whispering Galleries are associated with Class I (Additive) volumetric anomalies, yet several galleries on Floor 5194 sit within the Class A envelope of the Spiral of Deferred Ascent. The Whisper of the Unbuilt Bridge has been observed in such transitional spaces, though the Office of Architectural Permanence maintains that incomplete spans are not Class A until the first keystone is seated. The Coercive Harmonics division disputes this, citing Corollaries 4 through 9.
"No element shall be deemed Class A whilst its floor number remains unverified by two separate scriptoria."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4
Related classifications are maintained in Material Anomalies, Silvanus voids, and Temporary Permanencies. The Shifting Gallery and Spiral Passages are cross-indexed under Spontaneous Manifestation where their appearance is unplanned.
