Automotive Specimen 22.J-47
MS 0136.54 · Objects and instruments
Automotive Specimen 22.J-47 is a Class VII (Inert Flora-Integrated) artifact housed within the Verdant Garage on Floor 119, "The Arboreal Annex." It constitutes the sole known instance within the Tower's holdings of a vehicular chassis entirely subsumed by a non-native, photosynthetically active biomass. Accession was performed under the authority of the Third Concordance, Clause 44, Annex Δ.
Physical Description
The specimen presents as a four-wheeled, metallic framework of approximately 5.2 meters in length and 1.8 meters in height. All identifying markings, manufacturer's plates, and glass components have been obscured or replaced by organic growth. The dominant flora is a species of woody creeper, internally designated Carpinus librarius, which has fully penetrated the chassis, emerging from window apertures, the engine compartment, and the interior cabin. A secondary layer of thick moss (Bryum continuum) carpets all horizontal surfaces. Two mature saplings, identified as a variety of dwarf ironwood, have taken root within the rear passenger compartment, their crowns emerging through the sunroof aperture.
Recovery and Provenance
The specimen was recovered on Date Index 742.19.5 by a survey team from the Specimen Recovery Division operating on the periphery of Floor 119. The team's log notes the artifact was discovered in a state of "perfect stasis and integration" within a disused service bay, with no signs of prior cataloguing or disturbance. The surrounding environment exhibited no other anomalous vehicular or industrial artifacts, making its origin a persistent point of scholarly inquiry. Clause 22.J of the Third Concordance was invoked to grant it provisional classification, pending a full taxonomical review that has yet to be convened.
Taxonomical Controversy
The classification of Specimen 22.J-47 remains contested. The Department of Manufactured Anomalies argues it should be reclassified as a Class III (Architectural Biotope), citing the precedent of Specimen 881-422 ("The Silent Bell"), which is treated as a habitat for its resident fauna. Conversely, the Office of Static Incongruities maintains its current Class VII status, holding that the artifact's primary identity is the automotive form, with the flora being a secondary, accretive phenomenon. This debate is further complicated by a footnote in the Seventh Concordance (Clause 19, Sub-clause 7) which ambiguously references "vehicular seedlings," a term never defined in any primary document.
Maintenance and Containment
The Verdant Garage maintains a specific microclimate for the specimen: constant 72% humidity, diffuse illumination equivalent to a forest understory (provided by luminous lichen arrays), and a gentle, cyclical air circulation pattern. Pruning of the Carpinus librarius is permitted only to prevent structural stress on the chassis and is performed quarterly by certified Horticultural Archivists. A standing directive prohibits any attempt to start the engine or manipulate any control surfaces, though all such mechanisms are believed to be fused solid by root growth.
Related Holdings and Scholarly Reference
Specimen 22.J-47 is frequently cited in comparative studies of inorganic matter hosting biological processes. It is conceptually linked to, though materially distinct from, Specimen 881-7 ("The Animate Straw Effigy"), which involves organic material displaying pseudo-mechanical function. Its static, reclaimed nature also draws parallels to artifacts recovered from The Specimen Stair, particularly those in the "Animated Debris" series overseen by the Specimen Recovery Division. The primary scholarly dossier is On the Arboreal Reclamation of Manufactured Forms: A Case Study of 22.J-47 by Archivist Kael, though its conclusions regarding the specimen's potential as a reproductive "seed" for further such artifacts have been disputed by the Concordance Steering Committee.
