Chronologists
MS 6602.72 · Guilds, orders and offices
Chronologists are a licensed order of researchers tasked with determining and maintaining the official temporal sequence of all recorded occurrences, non-occurrences, and conjectural events within the jurisdiction of the Tower. They operate under the directives of the Fifth Concordance, though their foundational methods date back to the disputed Pre-Concordant era.
Jurisdiction and Mandate
The jurisdiction of the Chronologists, as defined in Appendix Gamma-7 of the Fourth Concordance, is "all elapsed, current, and potential states of being and becoming that are held within the Tower's infinite ambit." In practice, they are most often consulted to date administrative decisions, the construction of new archival annexes, and the discovery (or, more accurately, the formal admission into the record) of new subjects. Their mandate also explicitly covers events that have not happened but which are considered to have a calculable probability of future occurrence, a duty that has led to significant procedural overlap with the Oneirologists.
Methodology: The Absolute Chronology
The primary artifact of the order is the Absolute Chronology, a continuously updated ledger stored in a dedicated reading room on Floor 47. Time is measured in Librarian Standard Intervals (LSIs), each interval defined as "the period required for one standard-issue Lucid Bronze pendulum to complete 86,400 full swings under conditions of perfect archival silence." The Chronologists maintain that LSIs are absolute and immutable, though they acknowledge practical difficulties in measurement, particularly on floors where local temporal effects are catalogued.
Dating an event involves cross-referencing witness testimonies (recorded on Nictitating Vellum for fidelity), administrative logs, and the relative position of the event within the Tower's spatial and conceptual architecture. The final, binding date is then stamped upon the relevant document using a seal of annealed chrono-glass, which is said to fracture irreparably if applied to a logically impossible sequence.
Scholarly Disputes and Notable Conflicts
The work of the Chronologists is fraught with internal contradiction, largely due to conflicting directives within the Concordances themselves. A principal and ongoing dispute concerns the status of Floor 0. The Third Concordance posits its construction as the foundational event of the Tower, establishing Year 0 of the Absolute Chronology. However, later excavations and textual analysis cited in the Sixth Concordance suggest references to administrative activity predating this "foundation," leading to the postulation of "Antecedent Time." Chronologists aligned with the Sixth Concordance maintain a separate, shadow ledger, a practice tolerated but not officially recognized.
Another significant conflict exists with the Dream-Scribes of Floor 112, Annex B, who record dream-events that possess internal causality but resist integration into the linear Absolute Chronology. The current compromise, per Ordinance 112.47.β, is to assign such events a "Oneiric Decimal" date using the Oneiric Decimal System, which exists in a parallel but non-interfering state alongside the LSI system.
Organizational Structure
The order is headed by the Grand Horologist, a position currently held by Arvad the Unblinking. Beneath them are the Master Sequencers, who oversee thematic branches of chronology (e.g., Architectural Time, Bureaucratic Time, Speculative Time). The bulk of the fieldwork is conducted by Licentiate Chronologists, who must pass rigorous examinations on paradoxical logic and Concordant law. A separate, lesser-known office is that of the Licentiates of Wakefulness, whose duty is to monitor the Grand Horologist and the Master Sequencers for signs of temporal fatigue or recursion, ensuring the stability of the present moment.
Notable Tools and Artifacts
Beyond the standard chrono-glass seal, Chronologists employ several specialized instruments:
- The Isochronal Pendulum
- A master pendulum of Lucid Bronze suspended in a vacuum chamber on Floor 19, against which all secondary timepieces are calibrated.
- Temporal Calipers
- Used to measure the "thickness" or duration of an event as recorded across multiple vellum sources, yielding an average "event-width" in micro-LSIs.
- The Möbius Ledger
- A theoretical accounting book used to log events that are both cause and effect of themselves; its physical existence is debated, but it is frequently cited in disciplinary hearings.
Recent Edicts and Future Directions
The most recent amendment to the Chronologists' charter (Fifth Concordance, Addendum XIX) has tasked them with beginning preliminary dating work for the proposed "Catalogue of Imminent Forgettings"—events which the Tower's collective memory is statistically likely to lose. This has required closer collaboration with probability cartographers and has, according to some critics, dangerously blurred the line between recording history and pre-writing it. As always, the Chronologists maintain that their duty is merely to document the sequence, not to judge its content.
