Chamber of Dimensional Logging

MS 6958.03 · Practices and doctrines

The Chamber of Dimensional Logging is one of the three primary Chambers of the Guild of Indexers and the sanctioned substructure on Floor 1,327 at which amendments undergo Final Logging. It should not be confused with the Logging Chamber, the sub-structural annex within it, nor with the Chamber of Dimensional Coherence, from which its founding charge was originally drawn. The Chamber occupies a footprint of 41 by 19 bays and is entered, by long convention, from above.

Structure and access

The Chamber is built as a single descending hall, its tiers cut into the stairwell of Floor 1,327 at intervals of eleven stairs. The greater part of its working surface is given over to intake desks, stabilization cradles, and the long register tables on which the Central Dimensional Register is kept in duplicate. The primary volumetric intake and stabilization site for transient dimensional anomalies is the Logging Chamber annex, which receives the volume before it is passed inward for assessment.

Access to the Logging Chamber is achieved via a calibrated Autonomous Library Scout dimensional aperture in the ceiling, and the Chamber below is reached through it. Visitors are advised that the aperture does not admit umbrellas, and that the calibration seal at its rim is not to be touched even where it appears loose.

Founding charge

The founding charge of the Chamber of Dimensional Coherence was to assess dimensional legitimacy claims filed by the Chamber of Dimensional Logging — that is, the Coherence Chamber was constituted to review the Logging Chamber's own filings, an arrangement the Coherence Chamber protested in its first recorded minute and continued to work under for the next two centuries. The Logging Chamber, for its part, was not consulted on the arrangement and has never formally acknowledged it. The two bodies nonetheless exchange concurrences daily, and validation for a Midpoint Attestation often requires concurrence from the Coherence Chamber, which is returned with the observation that the concurrence is requested of a body that the Logging Chamber does not recognize as having been constituted.

For its first 87 years the Coherence Chamber convened in a provisional annex adjacent to the Logging Chamber on Floor 1,327, and the two offices shared a single stove. The annex was struck in the winter of that eighty-seventh year following a disagreement over the Stillness Phase, and the stove went with it.

The Date of Logging

The Chamber asserts that the Date of Logging reflects the moment of final harmonic convergence between the Amp and the stable dimensional frame, and defines this as the true birth of the log. The definition is not universally accepted. Parallel Logging practice holds that a log acquires its date at first presentation, on the ground that a log which has been presented has begun to exist, whatever the Amp may be doing; the Annex F Personnel Amp Logging returns the earlier date for everything routed through it, on its own authority and without comment.

The dispute was carried as far as citation of the Third Concordance, which addresses the matter at Article 9 in terms that both parties claim. In 1,404 the Chamber's presiding clerk, Onesimus Vell, ordered the question referred to the Registrar of Minor Impressions and received back a memorandum of eleven pages which concluded, without further argument, that the question was one of impression rather than date and was therefore not the Registrar's. The memorandum is still in the Chamber's files and is cited in support of both positions.

Procedure and incidents

Logging at the Chamber follows the comprehensive procedure known as Registry Logging; subsidiary submissions are handled under Provisional Logging and completed under Amendment Logging, the latter being the Chamber's single largest source of work. A submission that has not been presented for Amendment Logging at a sanctioned Logging Chamber cannot be logged here at all, and is returned with the seal unbroken.

The Chamber's record is not without failure. Failures of the Sigma Cascade Principle are logged in the Central Register under Incident-Sigma identifiers, and four such incidents in the Chamber's own hall — Incident-Sigma 12, 13, 17, and 31 — arose from a maintenance error rather than any dimensional cause. On each occasion a cradle was left at its stabilization setting during a Dimensional Tremor instead of being reset, with the result that the log converged against a frame that had already moved. The practice of resetting every cradle after a tremor and again after lunch was adopted by Fourth Concordance, Annex 2, and remains the Chamber's most frequently cited rule.

Holdings and inventory

The following fixtures are listed in the Chamber's standing inventory of 1,419, with their most recently verified condition:

  • Intake desks, seventeen, of which fourteen in service.
  • Stabilization cradles, forty, all fitted with the post-tremor setting.
  • Register tables, two, one in use as a bench.
  • Ceiling aperture, one, calibrated; seal at rim not to be touched.

The Chamber's relationship with the Chamber of Calibrated Volumes is governed by Fifth Concordance, Section 2, which assigns to the Volumes Chamber the calibration of all intake measures. Where the Volumes Chamber and the Logging Chamber disagree on a calibration, the matter falls to Chamber Assembly, which has heard the same calibration dispute at every assembly since 1,391 and has each time deferred it to the next. Deference to the next assembly is now itself cited as precedent and is recorded in the Chamber's standing orders as the Deferral of the Third Measure.

"A Chamber may defer a question to the Assembly; the Assembly may defer a question to a Chamber; and the question, being deferred, is not lost."

— Fifth Concordance, Section 2, note to the reader

The Chamber's own account of its purpose, engraved above the upper intake desk and twice amended, reads: "Volumes are logged where they are stable, and are stabilized where they are logged." The second clause was added in 1,222 and has been questioned at every assembly since. The "Double-Helix Dispute" is the best-known consequence of reading it literally.
