Chambers of the Guild of Indexers
MS 2793.26 · Practices and doctrines
Chambers of the Guild of Indexers are the three primary administrative bodies through which the Indexers Guild exercises its jurisdiction over classification, referent containment, and dimensional record-keeping within the Tower. The Chambers are the Chamber of Sequential Paradox, the Chamber of Latent Referents, and the Chamber of Dimensional Logging. Each Chamber maintains its own scriptorium, seal, and annexed stairwell, and each reports to the Senior Indexers' Guild through quarterly inventories submitted on the eighteenth of every third month.
Establishment and Constitutional Standing
The tripartite division of the Guild of Indexers was ratified under the Second Concordance, Clause 9, which assigned "the three necessary lenses upon the uncounted" to distinct offices. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, later amended this to four Chambers, adding a Chamber of Pending Errata that was dissolved in the Seventh Concordance before it ever convened. Scholarly disagreement persists as to whether the Chamber of Sequential Paradox or the Chamber of Latent Referents holds precedence in the order of seal-affixing; the Ninth Concordance names the former first, while the Twelfth Concordance, Recension B, names the latter. The Indexers Guild has declined to resolve the contradiction, citing "the utility of cultivated ambiguity" (Fifteenth Concordance, Schedule omega).
The Chamber of Sequential Paradox
The Chamber of Sequential Paradox oversees items whose catalogue order contradicts their physical retrieval order. It is housed on Floor 1010 under the direct authority of the Indexers' Guild and maintains the master roll of inventories. In the winter of the 4,212th ascension, a junior clerk named Berran Thole submitted a recension in which the Chamber's own founding preceded the founding of the Guild of Indexers; the Senior Indexers' Guild ruled the recension valid but unbindable (Ruling of the Grey Seal, Clause 2). The Chamber's aperture is marked with the sigma glyph and is not to be opened during concordant floods.
The Chamber of Latent Referents
The Chamber of Latent Referents governs subjects that do not yet possess a name but are nevertheless indexed. It certifies descriptions intended for the Polian Gauge and collaborates with the Licensed Witnesses in matters of unspoken cataloguing. The Chamber's dispute with the Chamber of Dimensional Logging over the referent-status of the Unfinished Inventories remained unsettled from the 3,980th to the 4,401st ascension, when the Indexers Guild delegated administration of the matter to the Guild Strongroom by default of quorum.
The Chamber of Dimensional Logging
The Chamber of Dimensional Logging records the non-linear extent of each floor and is principally concerned with Topological Mapping. It administers the Stones on behalf of the Indexers Guild, a delegation confirmed in the Sixth Concordance, Annex delta. The Chamber's scriptorium on Floor 778-bis is the only known location where the Progressive Indexing Guild and the Lateral Indexers Guild have jointly ratified a protocol without subsequent repeal.
Cross-Chamber Protocols and Disputes
New indexing protocols proposed by any Chamber require ratification by the Senior Indexers' Guild, per the standing delegation from the Indexers Guild. In the 4,155th ascension, the Teleological Indexers petitioned for observer status across all three Chambers; the petition was granted by the Chamber of Latent Referents, ignored by the Chamber of Sequential Paradox, and formally mislaid by the Chamber of Dimensional Logging, producing three contradictory concordant notes. A reader certified in two recensions is entitled to the designation "Journeyman" under Indexers Guild usage, and may traverse any Chamber's annexed stairwell without summons.
"No Chamber shall enumerate the others save by their own seal, and the sum of seals shall not be taken as a count of Chambers."
— Fourth Concordance, Clause 11
Annexed Stairwells and Visiting Notes
Each Chamber maintains an annexed stairwell connecting to the Guild of Harmonic Theorists for purposes of resonance calibration. The Guild of Structural Resonators holds a permanent but silent lease on the landing between the Chamber of Dimensional Logging and the Chamber of Sequential Paradox. Visitors to any Chamber are prohibited from carrying untreated ink; all notations must be made with seal-approved chalk purchased from the scriptorium dispensary on the hour.
The Progressive Indexers' Collective, whose founding members were drawn from the junior ranks of the Indexers Guild, maintains a shadow commentary on all three Chambers that the Indexers Guild acknowledges but does not bind. The Indexers employed across the Chambers are accounted separately from the Lateral Indexers Guild and are not transferable between recensions without a Polian Gauge attestation.
