Annex III (Taxonomy of Spin)
MS 4382.41 · Documents and ordinances
Annex III (Taxonomy of Spin) is a procedural document appended to the Grand Taxonomic Framework for the classification and measurement of rotational potentialities within catalogued objects, phenomena, and theoretical constructs. Its formal designation, per Curatorial record-keeping, is Procedural Annex III: On the Measurement and Categorization of Latent and Manifest Rotation. It is maintained by the Procedural Annex#The DSP|Division for Speculative Procedurals (DSP) and is considered a foundational text for departments handling kinetic or temporal anomalies.
Origins and Mandate
The Annex was first drafted in the later cycles of the Omicron Calendar, following the Post-Silent Period re-codification efforts. Its creation was precipitated by a series of disputes within the Division for Metrological Anomalies regarding the correct classification of objects exhibiting "persistent torsion without apparent axis." The final draft, ratified under Addendum III-, charged the Annex with providing "a consistent lexicography for all states of turn, whirl, and gyre, whether observed, inferred, or purely notional."
Core Classifications
The Taxonomy delineates three primary Orders of Spin, each with subsequent Sub-Orders and Variants.
Order I: Manifest Spin
Encompasses rotation that is directly measurable by Tower instruments. Sub-Orders include:
- Axial: Rotation around a fixed, internal axis (e.g., the documented wobble of certain shelves in Stairwell 44).
- Orbital: Rotation around an external point or object, catalogued under specific dimensional permits.
- Vortical: Spiral or helical motion, often associated with fluids or atmospheric phenomena in designated chambers.
Order II: Latent (or Implied) Spin
Concerns rotation that is not currently active but is inherent to an object's documented nature or history. This includes:
- Potential Spin: The capacity for rotation under defined conditions, a key property in the STNEM.
- Historical Spin: A recorded instance of past rotation that has since ceased, requiring a footnote in the object's provenance.
- Narrative Spin: Rotation described within the text of a catalogued Unwritten Book or other non-physical holding.
Order III: Notional Spin
The most contested Order, covering rotational concepts detached from any specific instantiation. Key categories are:
- Metaphorical Spin: The use of rotational terms in descriptive metadata (e.g., "a spinning tale").
- Anti-Spin: A theoretical quality defined as the active negation of rotation, often filed alongside Contradictory entries.
- Spin of Reference: The purported rotation of a cataloguing concept itself, such as the shifting definitions within a taxonomic framework.
Measurement and the Selvage Coefficient
Annex III standardizes the "Selvage Coefficient" (Sc), a unitless measure of spin intensity normalized against a notional "static state." The Coefficient's calculation, refined by the researcher M. Selvage, incorporates factors of rate, declared axis stability, and ontological certainty. Disagreements frequently arise between the Custodians and the DSP regarding the application of Sc to Residual Motive phenomena, where spin is perceived but not instrumentally verified. These disputes are typically deferred to the protocols in Annex 7, Volume III.
Notable Applications and Disputes
The Annex is routinely cited in floor-specific ordinances. For instance, Clause 4 of Annex B to Concordance III-44 references Order I.Axial, Sub-variant 4 (Slow Wobble) to regulate the placement of rolling stacks in the 2.5-meter clearance aisles on Floor 22.
A protracted scholarly debate, known as the "Circularity Controversy," concerns whether the Taxonomy's own structure exhibits a Notional Spin of Reference. Proponents, citing Clerk Aris's treatise, argue this creates a risky ontological feedback loop. The Curators have issued a standing clarification that the Annex itself is categorically spin-neutral, a position nonetheless contested by a minority of Cartographer-Scribes who map conceptual vortices.
Current Status
Annex III remains a living document. Its most recent update, Amendment Theta-7, added a provisional category for "Environmental Coriolis Effects in Non-Linear Stairwells," following survey reports from upper floors. All proposed amendments must be logged with the DSP and are subject to a review period that, under Addendum Kappa, cannot be less than one full Omicron spin cycle. Its protocols are considered complementary to, though occasionally in tension with, the dimensional classifications in the Seventh Concordance’s Annex on Dimensional Taxonomy.
