Aethelred Spiral (Spiral 899)
MS 3996.02 · Objects and instruments
Aethelred Spiral (Spiral 899) is the helical shaft, stair, and catalogue entry jointly designated as the Aethelred Spiral under Spiral 899, and is the sole quarry source of Aethelred's Silence. The confusion of this article's title with that of its principal holding is acknowledged in the catalogue's own preface and is not considered an error; Concordance 44 (revised) treats the redundancy as "pious and necessary," and the two entries were formally separated only in the 1,104th recension, after two centuries of reliance on a single file.
Description and Extent
Spiral 899 is a helical structure of thirty-one recorded turns, rising through a shaft of dressed grey grit and terminating at an aperture designated Delta. Its descent is unmeasured: the 12th Spiral Survey logged eleven turns below the entry landing before the survey party's line parties reached the end of their allotted cord and were recalled. The Foreman Aethelred recorded the shaft as "sound, and more so than the record requires" in his audit returns, which is the only occasion on which he is known to have offered an opinion on a matter outside his remit.
The Spiral gives its name to the Helical Permutation Lattice, a system of stair-numbering proposed by the shaft's survey office and never fully implemented; a section of the spiral between turns fourteen and seventeen remains numbered according to it, which is why no two consecutive turns in that stretch are designated consecutively.
Quarrying and Aethelred's Silence
The mineral substance Aethelred's Silence is quarried exclusively from Spiral 899, from a face between turns nine and eleven. The Foreman first identified it during the 12th Spiral Survey while conducting the material and dimensional audit of the shaft, and the quarry operation has run under continuous licence since. Output is small and is recorded by weight rather than volume, for reasons set out in Concordance 19, which declines to state them.
Most of what leaves the quarry face goes to the vaults on the upper turn, where the primary physical standard of the Aethelred Tome-Weight is housed together with its silence standard. Secondary standards — fifty-one of them at last count — are cut from the same quarry batch, and the practice of cutting them "of a piece with the standard" has been defended in print by the Spiral's quarry office as guaranteeing a sameness no comparison can improve upon.
Visitors to the quarry gallery are asked to leave lamps at the turn-seven landing. No reason is given on the notice, and none has been sought.
The Registers of Provenance
Every load of Silence removed from Spiral 899 is entered in the Spiral Registers, an unbroken sequence of bound volumes maintained since the first cut. The Registers record the batch, the turn, the baulk, the master of the quarry, the witness, and the weather. It is the sixth field that has caused the most difficulty. In the winter of floor 821's fifth audit, a dispute arose between the quarry office and the Office of Successive Weights over whether a batch quarried in fog could be paired with a batch quarried in clear air for the purpose of the Tome-Weight comparison. The Office held that it could not; the quarry office held that fog is not a property of a mineral. The matter was referred to the Concordance of Precedents, which found for the quarry office but ordered the weather field divided into two fields, and thereafter the Registers have recorded cloud and wind separately.
Approximately eleven volumes of the Registers are missing. The catalogue notes them without alarm.
Disputed Provenance
Concordance 19, Annex 2, asserts that Spiral 899 is the exclusive and original source of Silence and that no other face has ever been opened. Concordance 31, which is older and shorter, refers in its preamble to "the several spirals from which the substance is taken," a phrase that has never been struck. The Bureau of Reckoning has ruled three times that "several" in the older instrument is a scribal error for "the seventh," and three times the ruling has been appealed on the ground that there is no seventh spiral.
The Quarry Wardens' Recension of the Registers, a private and unauthorised edition held in the Atelier of Permanent Impressions, records a batch from turn six in a hand the quarry office does not recognise. The Wardens' position, stated in their preface, is that "the entry is either a forgery or a fact, and the Registers have survived both before." No reconciliation has been attempted.
Administration
The Spiral is administered by the office of the Foreman of the Spiral, a title most famously associated with Foreman Aethelred and held since his retirement by a succession of wardens who have declined to be named in the catalogue. The office keeps the quarry key, the Registers, and a small sealed jar whose label has faded; the office has ruled that the jar is not to be opened until the label can be read, and that the label is not to be read until the jar is opened. The ruling is entered in the Registers as settled.
The Aethelred Impression, a rubbing taken from the shaft's ninth-turn face, is held on loan to the Desk Alpha reading room and is not to be handled with gloves, a note the reading room has queried twice without reply.
