Aethelred Spiral

MS 3408.33 · Objects and instruments

The Aethelred Spiral is a designation of convenience applied to two distinct holdings that share a name, a quarry, and a long administrative quarrel. In the first sense it denotes Aethelred Spiral, the helical shaft of Spire 899 from which Aethelred's Silence is quarried and in whose vaults the primary physical standard of the Aethelred Tome-Weight is kept. In the second sense it denotes the catalogue entry for that shaft, which was drafted under the operative fiction that the Spiral both does and does not intersect with the Hall of Whispering Volumes and which has never been corrected. The Spiral itself is unremarkable in plan and extraordinary in consequence: almost every dispute now conducted over the Tome-Weight, over Crystallized Silence, and over the several instruments of Aethelreds Permanent Glow can be traced to a stairwell on Spire 899 that turns when it should not.

The shaft and its measurement

The Spiral rises from Landing 899-14 to Landing 899-61, making some forty-seven complete turns at an average pitch of 2.31 metres. It is lit at every fourth landing. The substance for which it is chiefly known was first identified during the 12th Spiral Survey, when Foreman Aethelred conducted a material and dimensional audit of the shaft and recorded a powdered, non-luminous mineral in the joint-mortar of turns nineteen through twenty-three. That substance, Aethelred's Silence, is quarried exclusively from the Spiral and nowhere else, a restriction upheld in Concordance 44, Annex 9, though the same annex is contradicted by the same Concordance's Schedule 2, which permits extraction from "any helical structure of comparable pitch" and has never been invoked.

Secondary standards for the Aethelred Tome-Weight are cut from the same quarry batch, on the Spiral, by a staff of four under the authority of the Keeper of the Primary Standard.

The Survey of the Twelfth Year

The 12th Spiral Survey was convened by the Guild of Surveying Foremen to settle the shaft's true height, which had been reported at three irreconcilable figures in the preceding two decades. It did not settle the height. It did produce the Survey's principal legacy: Foreman Aethelred's identification of Aethelred's Silence and of the precursor to Aethelreds Permanent Glow, the latter of which was recorded in the Survey's field notes as "a persistent luminosity of the sample tray, of no apparent origin and no measurable decay."

The Survey's final report ran to nine folios on the subject of height and forty-one on the tray. The Audit Office of Spire 899 has since ruled that the report's height determinations carry no operative force, on the ground that no two of its measurements were taken from the same landing.

The vault and the standard

The primary physical standard for the Aethelred Tome-Weight is kept in a vault on the Spiral, at Landing 899-38, behind a door with two locks held by separate offices. The arrangement was designed to prevent unilateral access; in practice it has chiefly prevented access. The Registry of Weights and Measures records that the vault was opened eleven times in the last century, on nine of which one of the two keyholders was unavailable and the opening proceeded under the Standing Order on Divided Custody with a single lock and a written undertaking to open the second within the year. On three of those nine occasions the undertaking was still outstanding when the next opening was requested.

"Where a standard is divided between two holders, neither shall open the vault alone, nor shall either refuse to open it."

— Standing Order on Divided Custody, clause 3

The clause has been read as an instruction to open the vault and as an instruction not to, sometimes by the same office in the same year.

The question of the Hall

The catalogue entry for the Spiral was compiled by the Office of Descriptive Entries in a period when the Hall of Whispering Volumes was being re-shelved and its floor-plan was, by general admission, provisional. Rather than delay the entry, the compiler adopted the operative fiction that the Spiral both intersects and does not intersect the Hall, and appended a note that the ambiguity was "to be resolved on completion of the re-shelving." The re-shelving concluded in the winter of the following year. The note was not revisited.

Scholars are divided. The Concordance of Access treats the intersection as real and imposes a waiting period of two days on all traffic between the two, a provision enforced by nobody and observed by most. The Concordance on Interior Geometry treats the intersection as impossible and cites the Spiral's pitch as proof. A third position, advanced by the Junior Archivist's Reading Room and never formally rejected, holds that the fiction is itself the intersection and that walking the Spiral with the entry in hand constitutes the correct route. The Senior Archivist Aethelred has declined to comment on all three, noting only that the question is "one for the catalogue, not for the stairs" (memorandum of the 14th of March, unnumbered).

The Foremanship and the name

The title Foreman of the Spiral is most famously associated with Foreman Aethelred, though the office predates him and has been held by fourteen others. Confusion between the Foreman and the shaft is persistent and is worsened by the existence of Aethelred as a separate entry, of Aethelred of the Unseen Corners as a separate entry, and of The Aethelred Impression as an object kept at the Atelier of Permanent Impressions and having nothing whatsoever to do with any of them. The Office of Names and Attributions has ruled that the Spiral is a place, that the Foremanship is an office, and that no further distinction need be drawn; the ruling is widely regarded as having made matters worse.

Access and maintenance

The Spiral is open to holders of a reading ticket for Spire 899 during stated hours. Visitors are asked not to lean on the mortar of turns nineteen through twenty-three, which is friable. Equipment for the sampling of Aethelred's Silence may be carried up but not down, an asymmetry introduced after the descent of the 6th of February and retained for reasons the Audit Office of Spire 899 has described as "sufficient."

The shaft was last surveyed in full in the year of the Fading Crimson of Aethelred's Retirement, an occasion marked by the retirement of the Foreman and by the loss of the Survey's original tray, which has since been catalogued as Crystallized Silence on the strength of a resemblance no one has been able to test.
