Absorptive Stasis
MS 7608.85 · Practices and doctrines
From Annex 2-B, Twelfth Concordance: “Absorptive Stasis is not a form of preservation but a modality of classification, wherein an entity is defined by its capacity to enter stasis, rather than by its inherent properties.”
Absorptive Stasis is a specialized classification within the broader frameworks of Stasis as Process and Absorptive Theory. It describes a condition wherein an object, phenomenon, or conceptual space is considered to be in a state of Administrative Stasis, not due to an external order or procedural failure, but as a direct consequence of its own absorptive properties. The entity, in effect, absorbs the stasis directive itself, internalizing it as a core aspect of its being. This creates a unique archival paradox: the subject is both actively catalogued under stasis protocols and perpetually enacting the stasis upon itself.
Definition and Formal Recognition
Absorptive Stasis was formally codified in Amendment 47 to Clause 9 of the Theta-7 Stasis Order, following the Floor 14,142 Stasis incident. The amendment distinguishes it from passive Temporal Stasis by its active, self-sustaining nature. A subject in Absorptive Stasis does not require a continuous regulatory energy input or a clerk's seal to maintain its condition; the stasis is an emergent property of the subject’s interaction with its own classified state. The Office of Acquisitions & Stasis is the sole authority empowered to certify a state of Absorptive Stasis, typically following a Dimensional Stasis Verification survey.
Mechanisms and Triggers
The transition into Absorptive Stasis is poorly understood, as observing the trigger often necessitates a survey that itself may be absorbed. Current theory, as outlined in the Manual, posits several potential mechanisms:
- Conceptual Saturation: An entity absorbs so much classificatory data or ontological weight that it achieves a state of informational equilibrium, freezing its own developmental timeline.
- Paradox Internalization: The entity encounters a logical or archival paradox fundamental to its existence and, rather than resolving it, absorbs the paradox as a static, unchanging core.
- Protocol Feedback: During standard stasis procedures, the entity exhibits anomalous Absorptive properties, effectively “drinking” the stasis field and becoming its own source.
The most cited example is a particular strain of Silent Moss, which, upon being surveyed for potential Charged Stasis properties, was found to have entered a perfect, self-contained stasis mid-survey, absorbing the surveyor’s measurement protocols into its structure.
Procedural Implications
Managing a subject in Absorptive Stasis presents significant challenges for the Tower’s bureaucracy. Standard stasis maintenance, such as renewal petitions or Stasis Quarantine rotations, is not applicable. Instead, the Office of Acquisitions & Stasis maintains a Reflective Folio, a specialized variant of the Stasis Folio. This folio does not contain directives for the subject; rather, it catalogues the effects the subject’s stasis has on its surrounding archival environment. For instance, Folio R-889 for the “Chamber of Receding Echoes” (Floor 7,302) primarily documents the gradual slowing and eventual stasis of all auditory cataloguing attempts within a 50-meter radius of the Chamber’s door.
Interaction with an absorptively static entity requires a Gradient Stasis approach, where surveyors operate within layered, diminishing levels of procedural engagement to avoid being subsumed by the entity’s stasis field.
Controversies and Scholarly Dispute
The standing of Absorptive Stasis within archival hierarchies is a matter of ongoing debate. The primary controversy hinges on whether it constitutes a true stasis or a novel form of active existence.
- The Process School: Led by archivists from the Office of Acquisitions & Stasis, this view holds that Absorptive Stasis is the purest form of Stasis as Process—an endless, self-referential loop of stasis enactment. They cite Clause 9, Amendment 47 as definitive.
- The Taxonomic School: Scholars from the Department of Emergent Taxonomies argue that Absorptive Stasis is a misnomer. They contend that an entity which actively maintains its own condition cannot be “static”; it is performing a continuous, if singular, action. They propose reclassification under “Auto-Conservative Phenomena,” a category currently only acknowledged in a footnote to the Third Concordance.
- The Absorptive Purists: A minority faction within Absorptive Theory circles argues that Absorptive Stasis is not a stasis at all, but the terminal stage of absorption, where an entity becomes so perfectly aligned with its archival concept that it ceases to interact with the Tower’s temporal flow. This view is frequently dismissed as verging on metaphysical speculation unsupported by the Manual.
Known Instances
Fewer than twenty confirmed cases of Absorptive Stasis are recorded in the central index. Notable examples include:
- The Bell of Unheard Noon (Floor 22)
- A bell that absorbed the concept of “tolling,” now suspended in a state of perpetual, silent vibration. Its Stasis Folio is a single, eternally blank page.
- The Stairwell of Arrested Descent (Spiral 94, Aperture Delta)
- A staircase that absorbed a Theta-7 Stasis Order intended for a malfunctioning lift on the floor below. Each step now exists in a discrete temporal stasis, making ascent or descent a process of navigating discontinuous moments.
- Specimen V-7 (Holding Vault, Sub-Level Γ)
- A volume titled “A History of Its Own Indexing.” The text absorbs any metadata applied to it, resulting in a continuously updating yet fundamentally unchanging table of contents. It is considered the paradigmatic case for study.
The existence of Absorptive Stasis challenges the Tower’s foundational principle that stasis is something done to a subject. It introduces the recursive notion that a subject can, through its intrinsic nature, become the act of its own archival suspension.
