Western Wing Stacks
MS 5074.78 · Places and structures
Western Wing Stacks designates the contiguous band of archival floors along the western lateral face of the Tower, administered under the provisions of the Seventh Concordance and catalogued as a subordinate network of the broader Western Stacks. The Western Wing Stacks are distinguished from the West Marginal Wing by their load-bearing shelf geometry and from the West Silent Wing by the permitted transmission of cataloguing chants below 40 decibels.
Topology and Floor Designation
The Western Wing Stacks comprise Floors 7,114 through 7,139, with the anomalous insertion of Floor 7,088-Bis between 7,121 and 7,122 following the Recension of the Narrow Aperture (Year 1,902 of the Stack Calendar). Floor numbering within the Western Wing Stacks does not correspond to elevation; the Senior Cartographer-Archivist Arin Vex observed in the Cartographer's Marginalia that "the western face folds upon itself such that 7,130 lies physically beneath 7,116, a condition ratified by Concordance Iota, Addendum 9, though never reconciled with the Western Legal Stacks holding of the same." The West Wing Annex on Floor 14,142 is excluded from the Western Wing Stacks despite shared nomenclature, a distinction upheld by the Office of Lateral Affiliation in Ruling 22-Delta.
Administrative History
Prior to the Schism of the Shifting Stacks, the Western Wing Stacks were governed jointly by the Guild of Theoretical Mechanics and the scriptoria of the Western Habitation Annex. The Collapse of the Western Stack severed administrative continuity, and subsequent jurisdiction passed to the Wardens of the Western Face, an office whose appointment seal was lost in the Great Calcification Event and re-cut in Year 2,114. Guildmaster Aris of the Western Stacks entered a dissenting opinion in the Ballast Ledger asserting that "calibration of the Western Wing Stacks via the Ballast Map was performed upon a substrate of uncertain provenance, and the curation thereby void under Third Concordance, Annex 4." The dissent remains unexpunged.
Notable Holdings and Incidents
The Western Wing Stacks house the Interim Catalogue of Forgotten Apertures, a rolling inventory revised each equinox by the Clerk of Passing Light. In Winter 1,987, a mis-shelving by Junior Clerk Besso of the Lateral Margin placed the record of the Ephemeral Salamander within the Wing of Latent Imprints, precipitating a three-month dispute with the Wing for Ephemeral Geometries resolved only by direct citation of the Western Legal Stacks copy of Concordance Iota, Addendum 9. The Hall of Interim Objects maintains a reciprocal deposit on Floor 7,127.
"No stack upon the western wing shall be relocated without the countersign of two Wardens and one silent witness from the Silent Wing Floor."
— Seventh Concordance, Clause 11-Beta
A visiting Librarian may not carry open flame past the Aperture of Subdued Echo on 7,118; this restriction is posted without comment at the stairhead and has not been amended since Year 1,440.
Scholarly Disagreement
A persistent contradiction concerns whether the Western Wing Stacks fall under the Anti-Normalization School advanced by Elara of the Western Stacks. The Second Recension of the Western Spiral Stacks asserts subsumption, citing Elara's dictum that "the wing is the stack unfinished." The West Lateral Stacks oversight committee denies this in Finding 9-Omega, arguing the Western Wing Stacks were enumerated post-Schism and thus outside Elara's rubric. The Stacks of Possible Geometries holds a contingent volume treating both positions as simultaneously valid within separate spirals.
Cross-Reference to Adjacent Networks
The western boundary of the Western Wing Stacks meets the West Silent Wing, suspended between the West Wing of Floor 2004 and the Theoretical sub-stacks. The Western Stack proper continues beyond the Collapse line, though physical access requires transit through the The Murmuring Stacks per the Office of Lateral Affiliation advisory of Year 2,201. Records duplicated from the West Wing of Floor 1,147 are archived in the Sub-Rotunda of Coincident Names, a depository whose seal is struck in calcified resin.
