The Warden of Perilous Folios is a senior administrative post within the Office of the Warden of Descent, certified under Ordinance 23.Δ to identify, sequester, and adjudicate the status of documents deemed to pose a "peril of ontological leakage" to adjacent holdings. The Warden’s authority extends to any floor where a folio has been formally designated Perilous, and their rulings on containment protocols are binding, pending appeal to the Panel of Adjudication.

Scope of Authority

Jurisdiction is defined by the "Principle of Adjacent Influence," which holds that a Perilous Folio can, through sustained archival proximity, alter the factual weight of neighbouring documents. The Warden is empowered to issue sequestration orders, mandate the installation of "null-void" bookends (standardised under Annex Gamma-7), and authorise the creation of compensatory Negative Folios to preserve catalogical balance. Notably, the role intersects with that of the Warden of Boundary Arbitration in cases where a folio’s peril is argued to be a function of territorial dispute rather than intrinsic content. Designation Process

The Ceremony of Sequestration

Once designated, a Perilous Folio must be physically transferred to one of the three authorised "Quarantine Alcoves" (located on Floors 419, 7,412, and the disputed annex of Spiral 9). This transfer, known as the Ceremony of Sequestration, is a formal proceeding. The Warden of Perilous Folios presides from a portable lectern, flanked by two Vowed Librarians of Silence. The folio is carried upon a lead-lined pallet by the proposing agent, who must recite the "Disavowal of Certainty" from the Third Concordance. The ceremony is considered complete only when the Warden has stamped the transfer docket and the alcove’s void-lock has been engaged. The tenure of Warden Elara Sind (Cycle 42,319–42,405) is often cited for her rigorous application of "apertural precedent" to volumetric disputes, establishing the Sind Doctrine that "peril diminishes logarithmically with shelf clearance." Her rulings, compiled in the Folio of Precedential Leakage, remain a primary reference. The current Warden, Archivist-Legate Kaelen, appointed in Cycle 42,981, has controversially expanded the scope of the office to include "prophylactic designation"—the pre-emptive marking of folios not yet perilous, but deemed "leakage-prone" based on thematic resonance with existing holdings.
