Barrow of the Warden-General
MS 0715.79 · Places and structures
The Barrow of the Warden-General is a sealed funerary complex and administrative anomaly located on the theoretical lower-boundary of Directorate-controlled floors, traditionally assigned the provisional designation Floor 1. It is the purported final repository for the mortal remains and accrued protocols of the original Warden of Descent, a title posthumously conflated with the honorific “Warden-General.” The Barrow’s existence, while referenced in early Annexes, is not recognized under current Concordant law, rendering its physical visitation and procedural status a matter of ongoing jurisdictional dispute.
Architectural Description
The Barrow is described in pre-Concordant expedition ledgers as a “non-Euclidean anteroom” preceding the first officially numbered floor. Its sole registered entrance is Aperture 0, a circular doorway of fused basalt set into the foundation plinth of the Central Spire. The aperture is marked with the sigil of the silent bell—three concentric circles bisected by a vertical line—which is otherwise only seen on the Warden of the Silent Stroke’s ceremonial seal. Beyond the aperture, accounts diverge; the most cited description, from the Cartographer-General’s ill-fated Descent of Year 312, claims a hexagonal chamber containing seven stone biers, only one of which is occupied. The walls are said to be lined with lead-sealed niche-archives containing the “First Instructions,” which are hypothesized to be the ur-texts preceding even the Zeroith Concordance.
Jurisdictional Paradox
The Barrow presents a unique classificatory crisis. The General Administrative Protocols, Clause 14.7, state that “all spaces below the acknowledged datum of Floor 1 fall under the purview of the Warden of Descent.” However, the Third Concordance, ratified by Librarian-General Tylus, explicitly defines the Warden of Descent as “an office perpetual, without origin or terminus.” This creates a logical impasse: if the office has no origin, it cannot have a founder, and thus a founder’s tomb cannot exist. The Office of the Archivist-General has issued three contradictory rulings on the matter (Edicts 45-A, 45-B revoking 45-A, and 45-C declaring the issue “extraneous to active cataloguing”). Consequently, the Barrow is simultaneously governed by the Warden of Unnumbered Floors (for its lack of a proper floor number), the Warden of Boundary Arbitration (for its liminal placement), and the Paradox Warden (for its contradiction of Concordant principle). These Wardens rotate ceremonial oversight on a 93-year cycle, a compromise detailed in the Theta-7 Accord.
The Rite of Sealed Inquiry
Every half-century, a delegation consisting of the sitting Archivist General, the Warden of the Chroniclers, and a legate from the Warden of Ephemeral Stacks is required to approach Aperture 0 and perform the Rite of Sealed Inquiry. This involves the reading aloud of a single, pre-approved question pertaining to foundational authority. The question is submitted in a triple-wax-sealed capsule through a narrow slot in the aperture. No answer has ever been recorded as returned, but the ritual’s perpetuation is mandated by Annex Ω of the Protocols. The Warden of Silent Acquisitions is responsible for crafting the question, a process that typically consumes the five years preceding the rite.
Scholarly Disputes
The primary academic controversy surrounds the identity of the interred. The traditionalist school, led by the late Archivist-Legate Kaelen, holds that “Warden-General” is a separate, primordial title that was absorbed by the later office of Warden of Descent, and thus the Barrow contains a legitimate, if nameless, precursor. The concordant rationalists argue that the Barrow is an elaborate “philosophical tomb,” a metaphysical construct built to house the idea of origination, and is therefore physically empty. A radical fringe theory, advanced by cartographers of the Deep Stacks, posits that the Barrow does not contain a body at all, but is instead the sealed container for the “First Forgetting,” a foundational event whose memory was deliberately excised from the Tower’s records. This theory is officially censured but persists in marginalia.
Current Status
The Barrow’s aperture remains sealed under seven layers of administrative wax, each bearing the imprint of a different Warden’s sigil. Access requires the unanimous consent of the Warden of Descent, the Archivist General, and the Warden of Perilous Folios, a consensus deemed impossible under current doctrinal schisms. It is listed in the Master Ledger under “Dormant/Foundational Anomalies,” with a cross-reference to “Theoretical Sepulchres.” All petitions for investigative descent are automatically forwarded to the Warden of Boundary Arbitration’s office, where they enter a filing spiral with no documented terminus. The Barrow thus persists as a perfect administrative artifact: profoundly referenced, legally negated, and permanently out of reach.
