Transitive Coincidence
MS 0945.10 · Practices and doctrines
Transitive Coincidence refers to the administrative principle that a declared coincidental name can, under specific conditions, transmit its coincidental status to a secondary subject through a sanctioned logical or procedural predicate. The principle is governed by Regulation of Transitive Cataloguing and represents one of the more contested areas within Onomastic law.
Definition and Foundational Precedent
Per Annex Δ of Regulation of Transitive Cataloguing, a Transitive Coincidence is formally recognized when Subject A (the Primary Coincidence) and Subject B (the Secondary Subject) are linked by a predicate from the Official Register of Sanctioned Transitive Predicates, and the linkage is deemed to be "administratively consequential" by a qualified assessor. The seminal case establishing this doctrine involved the indexing of Floor 4044, where the catalogued phenomenon "The Whispering Gallery of Gtmgedelta" was found to share its onomastic coincidence with the subsequently discovered ventilation shaft "The Gtmgedelta Draft." The Clerks of Coincidence successfully argued the draft was a "direct atmospheric consequence" of the Gallery, thus extending the coincidental designation.
Sanctioned Predicates and the Register
The Regulatory Artifacts Division maintains and periodically amends the Official Register. As of the last revision (Cycle 7,147), sanctioned predicates include: is a structural component of, emits/transmits, is ceremonially awakened by, is documented in the same folio as, and shares a custodial guild with. Proposed predicates such as is aesthetically reminiscent of or is mentioned in the same breath as have been consistently rejected by the Committee of Concordant Reconciliation as being overly subjective. The Guild of Resonant Masons continues to lobby for the inclusion of resonates in harmonic sympathy with, citing their foundational work on Coincidental Resonance.
"The predicate is not a bridge for meaning, but a conduit for administrative clarity. To confuse the two is to invite ontological silt into the archival ducts."
Procedure and Form Π-44-T
Initiation of a Transitive Coincidence ruling requires the submission of Form Π-44-T ("Declaration of Apparent Transitive Onomastic Coincidence") to the Office of Onomastic Coincidence. The form must be accompanied by notarized evidence of the predicate link and a completed Lineage Attestation, tracing the primary coincidence back to its original Declaration of Apparent Onomastic Coincidence. Field verification is then conducted by the Assessors of Coincidence, who are empowered to audit spatial relationships, review guild ledgers, and even witness Ceremonial Rites if necessary. A positive finding results in the issuance of a Writ of Transitive Mandate, often overseen by the Dust Arbitration Council.
Controversies and the "Slippery Spiral" Critique
The principle is not without its detractors. Scholars of the Bureau of Coincidental Resonance argue that transitive designations, over many cycles, create a "slippery spiral" where the original, Primal Coincidence-verified nature of a name becomes diluted through procedural linkage. They posit that this violates the spirit of Amendment 9-d, which sought to determine if a coincidence "impedes the system." A transitive chain, they claim, becomes

- Third Stairwell of Resonance: Declared transitively coincident with the Doctrine of Coincidental Preservation because it is the only access route to the doctrine's primary manuscript repository, per predicate is the sole structural component of access to.
